Born in Clifton in 1840, Symonds was an early advocate for the legitimacy of same-sex love. The tour will cover about 10 miles at a relaxed pace, stopping at each site for a short talk. Oxford educated, he trained as a doctor and played a key role developing the modern medical view of transsexuals. He also assisted with the UK's first male-to-female gender surgery. Taking examples from Britain and other countries, the talk will show how images of homosexuality and LGBT people have been constructed through cartoons and caricatures.
