Launch Party

Move Over Darling – Tom Marshman

A walkabout performance by Tom Marshman. Part of Bristol Ferment Fortnight. Made
up almost entirely of testimonies of the over 60’s about LGBT life in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s
and 80’s

Revealing Stories

A major first for Bristol! Find out how Bristol’s LGBT communities have fought to shape
and control their lives since the mid 20th century. The exhibition uses specially recorded
interviews with over 40 people, loans from national collections, objects, memorabilia
and works of art. Includes contributions by pupil groups at local secondary schools. A
Heritage Lottery funded project by OutStories Bristol in partnership with Bristol
Museums and Galleries and Bristol Record Office.

We are: Coming Out
Part of the We Are:’s events throughout LGBT History Month we want you to tell us
your experiences of coming out – using Twitter! Tweet us at @wearefest and tell us
your experiences of coming out, limited to the short and snappy 140 characters and
whether happy, sad, quirky or funny these stories will be collated and put together to
form a legacy piece. We’ll even use some to create a special musical piece which will
be showcased as part of We Are: Proud - Bristol Pride 2013. For those not on twitter

Neil Bartlett

Neil Bartlett is a writer, director and performer whose work is steeped in gay men’s
histories. His first book, Who Was That Man? about Oscar Wilde was published in
1988. He has also written several novels, including Mr Clive & Mr Page (which weaves
together incidents from the lives of Gordon Selfridge and Rock Hudson) and numerous
plays, including A Vision of Love Revealed In Sleep, about gay Jewish East End artist
Simeon Solomon.

John Addington Symonds Cycle Tour
When: Sunday 3rd Feb – 11am - @ King William statue, Queen Square, Bristol
Cycle tour of significant sites linked to critic and historian John Addington Symonds.
Born in Clifton in 1840, Symonds was an early advocate for the legitimacy of same-sex
love. The tour will cover about 10 miles at a relaxed pace, stopping at each site for a
short talk.
Accessibility: 2hrs stop-start cycling at relaxed pace, returning to start. Involves some
hills.

WalkOut – Along the Nightingale Valley

A gentle walk of about an hour to discover the nightingale valley in Brislington – home
to kingfishers and lampreys. Bus route no 1 to Broomhill from bus station.

UWE LGBT History Month Launch Lunch

Join us for the launch of UWE’s LGBT History Month activities. You’ll have the chance
to network with staff, students and members of the wider Bristol Community as well as
hearing from guest speakers whilst enjoying a hearty hot lunch (vegetarian option
available). There will be lots of information about what UWE does to support its staff
and students and a chance to hear about Bristol’s first exhibition on LGBT history held
at MShed during February from the organiser.

Diana Souhami

Diana Souhami’s biographies explore the most influential and intriguing of 20thC
lesbian lives. Subjects of her unflinching eye include Radclyffe Hall, Garbo, Gluck and
queens of the Parisian demimonde, Natalie Barney and Romaine Brookes. She has
also written about the nurse Edith Cavell, and the story of her stay on ‘Robinson
Crusoe’ island. All her books from Gluck to Coconut Chaos are being re-released by
Quercus in February, in paperback and Kindle formats.

We Are: Remembering

Back by popular demand our special We Are: Remembering club night takes over the
Queenshilling for an LGBT Journey down memory lane. We’ll be spinning classics from
the 70s, 80s, 90s & 00s as we look at the music and LGBT movements, memories and
mandates that defined generations. So whether you were dropping that ghetto blaster
and dancing hard to S Express when section 28 was introduced in 1988 or just slipping
into some gold hot pants and ‘Spinning Around’ with Kylie when it was finally repealed
in 2000 this is your chance to dance like it’s Old Skool whilst finding out more about
LGBT History.

WalkOut – Finding famous Bristolians

A gentle walk of about an hour to discover some of the amazing 45 acre cemetery and
nature reserve – resting place for many famous and infamous residents of Bristol. Very
nice cafe on site.

Bristol Pride Pop Up Shop

We are opening a special Pop Up shop for LGBT History Month. This is your chance to
‘pop’ in and meet the team, gather advice from LGBT service providers across the
South West and find out what events and activities are taking place for LGBT History
Month in Bristol. As well as the chance to stop and have a drink you can pick up
information and tickets for Bristol Pride 2013 or specially designed tote bags and
badges to show your support. This will also be home to our LGBT Bristol photo

Dressage

Michael Dillon: The Man Who Invented Transsexuals

Michael Dillon was the first person in the world to undergo medical gender transition
from female to male. Oxford educated, he trained as a doctor and played a key role
developing the modern medical view of transsexuals. He also assisted with the UK's
first male-to-female gender surgery. Cheryl Morgan explains how the modern history of
trans people began here in Bristol, and how two World Wars helped make this gender
revolution possible.

Mystery History Tour led by Andy Foyle with BSL Interpretation

Bristol historian and author Andy Foyle leads an easy stroll (lasting around 1.5 hrs)
through the city, lifting the curtain on our own peculiar and sometimes outrageous
histories. He will be accompanied by British Sign Language interpreter.

A chance for Bristol LGBT public & voluntary sector workers to network in an informal,
fun setting in central Bristol. The event is hosted by UWE Bristol LGBT staff network
and starts at 18:30 with dinner, followed by drinks and acoustic background live music
at 20:30. If you prefer, you can just join us at 20:30 for drinks. If you are interested in
working in these sectors then you are welcome to attend too.

From Scandal to Domesticity: Cartoon Images of Homosexuality
When: Thursday 21st Feb – 19:30pm @ Bristol Central Library, College Green
An illustrated talk by historian Robert Howes about the development of cartoons
representing homosexuals, from the early 19th century to the present. Taking
examples from Britain and other countries, the talk will show how images of
homosexuality and LGBT people have been constructed through cartoons and
caricatures. Starting with depictions of scandal by a usually hostile press, the talk will
go on to show how LGBT cartoonists have used the medium to comment on the
everyday incidents of domestic life.

Indigo – Lesbian Networking Evening with comedian Jen Brister

A popular night with a regular following, Indigo Bristol is an informal business and social
networking group for lesbian, bi, queer and trans women. Events are held on the 3rd
Thursday of every month in the plush and relaxed surrounds of Goldbrick House.
Women travel from all over the South West for our unique mix of friendly faces, ideas
and laughter. We’re the largest group in the region and regularly welcome between 80
and 100 guests at our monthly Indigo drinks socials.

Literary Trans-gressors

Jack Wolf explores characters and writers who were (probably or possibly) transgender
and discuss his research into real life 18th/19thC women who chose to live as men. He
will also discuss the challenge of writing a trans character in a historical novel whose
experiences are as real as possible yet still make sense to modern readers. Jack’s
novel, The Tale of Raw Head and Bloody Bones, has just been published by Chatto &
Windus.

Celebrating lesbians and our children – walking treasure trail

Join us for a walking treasure trail around Bristol Harbourside, followed by a tea party in
M-Shed at 4pm.This will be a celebration of the history of Bristol lesbian and children

Accessibility: The route is flat and pushchair accessible (cobbles at one stage but
manageable with a modern pushchair). We then take the ferry to cross the water from
SS Great Britain back to Millennium Square and finish by walking round to M-Shed. It’s
accessible to people in wheelchairs, until we get to the ferry. Manually operated
wheelchairs can go on the ferry, but unfortunately electric wheelchairs are too big, we
are told. So people in electric wheelchairs can, if wished go straight on to M-Shed from
SS Great Britain (but sadly would miss the last few clues of the trail).
Gender restrictions: Lesbians and bisexual women with their children – no gender
restrictions on children, including adult ‘children’.
LGBT History Walk around Bath
When: Sunday 24th Feb 2pm to 3:30pm.
Meet by the War Memorial in Queen's Parade, Bath.
A walk around the centre of Bath, pointing out the buildings and monuments which have
LGBT associations, either as places where people socialised or as meeting places for
the LGBT movement over the last forty years. The walk should last about an hour and a
half and finish back by the War Memorial, with the option of warming up in a local, teashop. Led by Robert Howes of Gay West.

Food and Film - Riot Acts: Flaunting Gender Deviance in Music Performance

Bristol Queer Caf & Kebele present: Riot Acts, a ‘trans-fabulous’ rockumentary
representing the multi-faceted lives of transgender and gender variant musicians. A
first-hand perspective of the intersections between gender performance and stage
performance, Riot Acts suggests that identities and bodies are undeniably political, and
the journey within a trans experience isn't always one of tragedy, but one of creativity
and joy.

Places for People – Staff LGBT Awareness Day
When: Thursday 28th Feb – All Day @ 1 - 3 Surrey Street, St. Pauls BS2 8PS
This an event for all ‘Places for People’ staff - It will be an all-day event, with one
information session / workshop in the morning (focusing on Transgender awareness, as
well as general Q&A on LGBT issues), and one in the afternoon focusing on older
LGBT people and Housing, with lunch mid-day included.
