Parents of Students with Developmental and/or Intellectual Disabilities Grades 8-12 Any parent wanting to know about Project LIFE, the referral process, businesses that partner with Project LIFE and how to prepare your son/daughter for Project LIFE – this workshop is for You! Challenging Behavior at Home Parents of Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or Intellectual Disabilities Parents of students with autism and/or intellectual disabilities will learn how to handle challenging behaviors at home. Topics that will be covered during this session will be giving your child choices, determining the function of the behavior, and using planned ignoring when appropriate. (Repeat from last year) Parents of Students with Developmental and/or Intellectual Disabilities Mark Biernath, Attorney at Law returns to speak about the application process and how your decisions now could affect decisions later in life. He comes with a wealth of knowledge and unbiased suggestions and helpful hints. Guardianship and Conservatorship 1 of 3 DATE November 5 6:00 – 7:30 pm January 14 6:00 – 8:00 pm January 28 6:00 -7:30 pm February 18 6:00 – 8:00 pm TOPIC IEPs 101 NOW/COMP Waiver and Family Supports: Application Walk thru Camps and Recreational Opportunities Challenging Behavior at Home Special Needs Financial Planning TARGET AUDIENCE/ AGE OVERVIEW All Parents of Students in Special Education Grades PreK-12 We have created this workshop to help parents and/or students to understand their part in the IEP process, with the belief that the most effective IEPs are where the parent, the student, and the school staff collaborate to write an individual plan to help the student succeed in school. Parents of Students with Developmental and/or Intellectual Disabilities Parents will meet with DBHDD and AVITA to complete applications for NOW/COMP Waiver and Family Supports. In addition, representatives from camps and recreation programs for individuals with disabilities will be available to answer questions and hand out information. *By the end of the evening, parents will have the necessary application completed and submitted to AVITA and Dept of Behavioral Health and Dev. Disability for the NOW/COMP Waiver. Parents of Students in Preschool Parents of Students with Developmental and/or Intellectual Disabilities 2 of 3 Parents of preschool students will learn how to handle challenging behaviors at home. Topics that will be covered during this session will be using visual cues, functional communication, and using the natural home environment for teaching skills. (Repeat from last year) Speak with the Special Needs Financial Dept. of MetLife and hear how families can best plan for their child’s financial future. Understand how income (gifts, donations, earnings, and inheritance) can affect one’s benefits status. This is strictly information with no obligation on parents to use the MetLife services in the future. Topics that will be covered during this session will be teaching your child coping skills, using selfmonitoring tools, and the importance of positive parenting.
