Geology Layers
Diagram
Use the picture above to answer the following questions
1. Which layer is the oldest?
2. Which layer is the youngest?
3. What geological phenomenon would have caused the displacement of layer F?
4. Layer M is not consistently the same height. Why?
5. Which of the above layers is an intrusion?
6. What is the name for a gap in the geologic rock record as shown in layer #1?
7. What geological formation is shown in layer #3?
8. Is layer #4 or layer #5 older?
Now you are going to create your own geology layer diagram. Include and label the following
geological components in your drawing: a fault line, an eroded layer (unconformity), six
different layers, an intrusion, an extrusion, and folding of the Earth’s crust in at least some of
your layers. Label your six layers A-F.
9. Using your pictures list the layers of Earth in order from oldest to youngest.
10. What is the law of superposition?
11. How can looking at fossils tell us what the conditions were like on Earth’s crust? (Use
examples in your answer)
