Taunton Teaching Alliance Coaching - Establishing a self-sustaining school CPD process which works DAY ONE 9.30 - 3.30 Thursday 26 November 2015 Crispin school DAY TWO 9.30 - 3.30 Thursday 25 February 2016 venue Crispin School July Twilight meeting date and venue TBC Aims: To explore the impact coaching can have at your school To prepare for implementation of a school coaching process for 2015-16 The Taunton Teaching Alliance invites teachers in your school to train as coaches and set up a coaching model within your school. This two day course explores what works and is practicable, and aims to address the following key questions: Does coaching make a difference? How do you know? How can your school sustain/develop a coaching programme? Participating teachers will have the chance to draw on the experiences of coaching at Heathfield, and develop links with other colleagues as they set up coaching systems in their schools. What training is involved? Day one 9.30-3.30 26th Nov: setting the context; what coaching is + what it isn’t; establishing trust, questioning/gathering evidence/impact; preparing for the gap task. Gap task: teachers complete coaching cycle with each other at their home school, taking turns as ‘coach’ in a five session process. Day two (8 weeks later) 9.30 – 3.30 25th Feb: share and reflect. Coaching in action: supporting the teacher to find solutions; explore how to adapt/develop within the home school; consider Heathfield’s coaching model; next steps including potential obstacles and how to overcome them. Plan for coaching one member of staff before end of year. After-school 1 ½ hour meeting June or July 2016: reflect on impact + action plan for the following year. Who should attend … who might make a good coach? Coaches should be skilled and empathetic communicators, good practitioners and willing to listen without imposing their own ideas. Coaches at Heathfield include a part-time teacher of SEN, the head of Dance, head of Drama, Second in MFL, and an experienced Science teacher – a diverse range! Who leads the training? Chris Moyse, Educational Consultant, trained Heathfield’s first coaches 8 years ago whilst LA Adviser. He is an education consultant and deputy head at The Bridgwater Academy. Coaching at Heathfield Coaching has become one of the central forces behind CPD at Heathfield School. In 2015-16, 20 teachers worked with eight coaches for up to five sessions each. All teaching staff have now worked with a coach, many more than once. Focuses chosen by staff are very different, ranging from leading a project within the Science department, to motivating challenging boys, to developing literacy in the Maths classroom. The coach is not the expert, but does become an integral part of the teacher’s journey. Coaching is solution-based, teacher-driven and confidential - all reasons why many Heathfield staff placed coaching as their most effective CPD last year. What is the cost? £150 per teacher, £50 Challenge Partner schools (we recommend TWO per school): The TTA is subsidising the cost of this course. Participating schools will commit to supporting their teachers as they coach each other before Christmas, then one other staff member at the home school before the end of the year. ‘Great sessions with fantastic teaching and learning tools as well.’ ‘I have been inspired by the course.’ Feedback from last year’s TTA Coaching course Taunton Teaching Alliance Coaching - Establishing a self-sustaining school CPD process which works DAY ONE 9.30 - 3.30 Thursday 26 November 2015 DAY TWO 9.30 - 3.30 Thursday 25 February 2016 July Twilight meeting TBC School : Postcode : Address : Link senior teacher phone no : Name of link senior teacher : Email : Details of Teachers First name Surnames Email Current post 1. 2.
