She/he recommends, performs and/or takes the appropriate measures for the maintenance and upkeep of equipment. This includes the maintenance of the inventory system(s) to support the nursing practice and simulation laboratory areas ensuring a safe and healthy work environment. The Clinical Learning Centre Technician participates in and contributes to the learning needs of students in nursing programs. She/he prepares for and provides laboratory support for open house demonstrations and other recruitment activities. Key Activities Technical Support; The Clinical Learning Centre Technician performs a range of services to support the upkeep of the operation and preparation of the nursing practice and simulation laboratory areas. She/he recommends, performs and/or takes the appropriate measures for the maintenance and upkeep of equipment. She/he; 1. Sets up laboratory equipment and supplies (including scenarios, mannequins, equipment, supplies, printed materials, computer resources, documentation, charts, videos, resource equipment and reference materials) according to curriculum guidelines set by Course Instructors. Ensures that all carts have adequate resources and supplies for teaching. Ensures that students and faculty have adequate resources to perform all aspects of course requirements. Puts equipment and laboratory in order after laboratories. 2. Provides moulage to enhance simulation of nursing practices. 3. Creates and maintains checklists of needed supplies, equipment, and mannequin programing for clinical scenario. Troubleshoots to obtain the desired outcome. Liaises with the Vendor for assistance when required. Works with faculty and program coordinators to develop laboratory modules, math quizzes etc. when requested. References best practices from established RNAO Best Practices Guidelines (Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario). Retrieves, sets up and dismantles laboratory equipment, supplies and resources for partnership usage of the clinical learning centre areas e.g. Queen’s, Fleming College, Peterborough Regional Health Centre and others, according to pre-determined requirements. May have to pick up and return equipment to hospital or other facilities (1% of time). Provides advice and orientation to instructors regarding laboratory procedures, location and use of materials and the operation of equipment. Identifies, recommends and/or performs general cleaning and maintenance in the clinical learning centre areas including laboratory equipment, mannequins and storage. Identifies needs for equipment maintenance and renewal of equipment. Takes the appropriate measures to ensure that equipment supply is adequate and functioning properly. Liaises with Physical Resource Department and/or Vendor for assistance when required. Participates in, ensures and contributes to creating a safe environment in the clinical learning centre areas; a) Remains current with safety regulations b) Checks and maintains safety equipment c) Provides training to individuals, including faculty, students and staff, using the laboratories and enforces safety procedures d) Maintains MSDS sheets for the nursing laboratories e) Inspects the First Aid Kit every three (3) months; request additional supplies; completes the accidental/illness record book for the Risk Management Office Planning, Supplies and Equipment The Clinical Learning Centre Technician maintains the inventory system to support the nursing practice and simulation laboratory areas including safe storage and handling of equipment and materials. She/he; 1. Determines the inventory needs according to curriculum guidelines set by Course Instructors. Prepares purchase orders and orders supplies. Keeps a database of Vendors and Contacts. Keeps a detailed database of ‘laboratory kit’ contents. Ensures an adequate inventory of laboratory supplies is maintained and stored appropriately. 2. May have to pick up and return supplies from local vendors (e.g. grocery store, Walmart, Canadian Tire, Shoppers Home Health and others) (1% of time) 3. Ensures the safe storage of hazardous materials. 4. Oversees the collection and safe disposal of waste materials according to regulations when applicable. 5. Determines the inventory needs for George Brown College site for the Trent/Fleming School of Nursing Post-PN Bridge to B.SC.N. program (1% of time), 6. Maintains the laboratory in hygienic, esthetic and mechanical working order. Utilizes appropriate services as indicated, e.g. laundry services. Initiates/arranges for laundering of laboratory linens as needed. 7. Ensures the completion of an annual inventory (supplies, equipment, and partners’ onsite inventory) of the clinical learning centre areas. Schedules, supports and plans for make-up laboratory times for students with faculty. 10. Works with the Administrative Assistant to process expenditures to ensure timely payment and accurate account coding; assist with tracking and reconciliation of expenditures Student Support The Clinical Learning Centre Technician participates in and contributes to the learning needs of students in nursing programs. She/he; 1. Prepares for and facilitates students’ teacher-referred nursing skills practice as set by student and instructor by supervising, demonstration and/or informally evaluating performance. Mentors students in clinical best practices related to care and assessment of simulated patients. 2. Supervises and tutors students either one-on-one or in groups during drop in laboratory sessions; provides feedback on student progress to instructors. This does not include the formal evaluation of students for grades (pass/fail). 3. Assists faculty and students during teaching laboratories, quizzes and laboratory examinations. Proctors or assists in proctoring of written quizzes and laboratory examinations when required. 4. Provides regularly scheduled open laboratory hours and assists students with skill acquisition and practice according to established laboratory procedures; provides students with feedback on their progress. This position does not include the formal evaluation of students. 5. Observes teaching practices to obtain a common frame of reference of techniques, as necessary. 6. Acts as a resource person for students. Communications and Event Planning/Coordination 1. Prepares for and provides laboratory support for open house demonstrations (e.g. Fall Preview, March Preview and Spring Thaw) and other recruitment activities. 2. Participates in department/school meetings related to practice and curriculum as requested. 3. Liaises with counterparts in other professional programs, within various sectors: university, colleges and clinical partners, for best practices smooth and equitable use of space and (e.g. templates: medication administration resources, charting and other practice resources) Operations 1. Ensures a safe and healthy work environment by complying with University health and safety policies, standard practices and programs in keeping with occupation health and safety legislation and regulations 2. Maintains competency in the full range of nursing practice and simulation through participation in workshops and conferences 3. Maintains current certification in CPR-C or Health Care Provider (HCP) and First Aid 4. Other related duties as assigned which do not account for more than 5% of the total duties. Experience Required A minimum of two years current experience in an active nursing role Current CPR-C or HCP Certification (within the past 12 months) and First Aid (within the past 3 years) from a provider satisfactory to the School of Nursing Knowledge and understanding of student and faculty requirements for laboratory procedures, skills and testing across the range of fidelity and technology. Ability to prepare and organize laboratory and demonstration materials Demonstrated computer skills and experience including Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Groupwise and Blackboard. Database knowledge an asset. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written skills with ability to interact well in a positive manner, using tact and diplomacy. Possess a friendly demeanor and provide intelligent solutions.
