TRELOAR TRUST JOB DESCRIPTION Post: Assistive Technology Assistant Accountable to: Assistive Technology Manager Responsible to: Assistive Technology Manager Location: Treloar Technology Hub JOB PURPOSE: To contribute to the provision of a high quality Assistive Technology service for young people with physical and learning difficulties. To demonstrate a sound understanding of assistive technology practice, including the maintenance of professional standards, risk assessment, recording keeping and team working. To provide a courteous, friendly and helpful service to clients . KEY TASKS: Reporting to the Assistive Technology Manager, the first line support technician has the key role to: Diagnose and rectify equipment faults. Modify and construct special equipment. Assist Assistive Technologists and Therapists in the assessment and design process for the provision of specialist equipment. The work of an AT technician requires a wide range of technical skills with a high degree of unsupervised work requiring decision making. In addition to practical skills an understanding of disability and good communication skills are essential to work in this demanding environment. Technical responsibilities Repairing and maintaining special assistive technology equipment. Adapting and modifying equipment. Constructing bespoke equipment. The skilled and safe use of hand, power and machine tools. Selection of materials, processes and finishes. The safe diagnosis and repair of equipment faults. To make technical decisions based on evidence and technical knowledge. To assist in the production of instruction manuals for specialist equipment. To research and follow engineering information for the installation, servicing, repair and construction of equipment. To install hardware for the operation of wheelchairs, computers and communication equipment. Programming electronic control systems. Undertaking the risk assessment of special equipment. To monitor and maintain workshop machinery, tools, equipment and consumables. Risk assessment and safety audit of Department facilities, work procedures and equipment. Professional Assisting clinicians with the assessment of a client’s special needs. To effectively manage personal workload, including responding to urgent referrals, prioritising work and balancing other department activities. To work in a busy environment where work patterns are disrupted by frequent requests from other staff, students, parents and carers. To update work records using Department and Trust IT systems. To participate in the Trust in-service training programme including assisting in the delivery of AT training to other departments. A commitment to Health & Safety and safe working practice. To communicate ideas, liaise with staff and work effectively as part of a team. To work in a professional manner in dealing with the needs of clients with disabilities and fellow staff. To support students in developing their independence, communication and social skills. To maintain a professional manner and appearance. Other duties To comply with policies and procedures relating to safeguarding, health and safety, equality and diversity, confidentiality and data protection, reporting concerns to an appropriate person. To support the Trust in safeguarding and protecting the welfare of all students. To keep up-to-date with mandated training including fire, manual handling, and safeguarding training. To maintain and develop own professional knowledge and awareness. To undertake any other such duties or general tasks and hours of work as may reasonably be required and any other responsibilities, which may from time to time, be delegated by your manager. Treloar Trust November 2015 Person Specification – Assistive Technology Assistant MINIMUM DESIRABLE Qualifications GCSEs including English and Mathematics at grade A-C (or equivalent). Higher qualifications in Engineering, Mathematics, Sciences and IT related subjects. An understanding/experience of disability. Design and development experience. Recording, stock keeping and ordering skills Health & safety/risk assessment experience. CAD/CAM and 3D printing knowledge Simple electronic circuit and soldering skills. Knowledge and Experience Understanding of basic electro-mechanical engineering principles. Practical light engineering manufacturing. Fault finding and repairs. Skills and Abilities Hand tool and bench skills. Simple electrical circuit skills. Basic machine tool skills. Wood and plastic working skills. Good verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. Proficient in IT to use email, internet and job recording systems. Personal Qualities A commitment to promoting and safeguarding the welfare of students. Ability to build good working relationships with staff and students. Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. To actively participate in Technology Hub activities Ability to work on own initiative and manage a busy workload effectively.
