This covers a large geographical area and is defined to the North by the M25 motorway with Trusts residing inside the M25 falling under Health Education South London . KSS covers 12 Acute Trusts and 3 Mental Health Trusts. Trainee doctors, from here on referred to as trainees, can follow various routes to achieve consultant or GP status. Listed here is the route that the majority of trainees will follow, culminating in receiving a CCT certificate at final completion of their training. Details of other routes to achieve this can be found in “The Gold Guide”, a copy of which can be found in your induction packs. The majority of UK graduates will have completed 4/5 years at Medical School. The Medical School located within KSS is based at Brighton – Brighton Medical School (BSMS), Brighton Sussex University Hospital (BSUH) Trainees then complete 2 years in Foundation Schools which gives them exposure and insight to a variety of specialties. The South Thames Foundation School is part of HE KSS and works in collaboration with and on behalf of the London Deanery to support approximately 950 trainees across KSS and including London hospitals south of the Thames. Trainees then choose how they wish to specialise, which they enter via a competitive recruitment process. This may be as a trainee GP or as a trainee hospital doctor. GP’s currently complete 3 years training, which includes a combination of GP training within GP practices, coupled with hospital based training spread across a variety of specialties. Trainee GP’s are managed via the GP Department within HE KSS. Specialty trainees are managed by the Specialty Workforce Department within HE KSS. Trainee hospital based doctors generally fall into 8 core specialties; Anesthesia, Acute Care Common Stem (ACCS), Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Surgery and Medicine. The duration of training and configuration of training length varies between specialties. The training is generally split into core training and higher training, although anaesthesia has intermediate as well. Some specialties are classed as ‘coupled’ whereby a trainee recruited into ST1 will progress through to CCT at ST5 to 8, subject to satisfactory progress. Other Trainee Rep Induction Pack V4 June 2013 3 specialties are classed as ‘uncoupled’ whereby a trainee completes 1 to 3 years of core training and then needs to compete for a place in the higher years of training. Higher training is currently managed in the main via the London Deanery on our behalf, although some specialties will be moving to being managed by KSS in the near future. KSS are now managing a large number of higher specialty programmes with the vast majority of these having access to places within London teaching hospitals to deliver elements of the curriculum required for the programme. Introduction from Deputy Dean Secondary Care We are in a time of reform once again in the National Health Service, with radical changes being enacted from April 1st 2013. The changes to the Health Service have also coincided with the final report of the Francis Investigations into mid-Staffordshire. The messages that are coming through loud and clear from these developments is that the trainee voice is pivotal in the delivery of excellent education which leads directly to excellent patient experience and outcomes. It is no surprise therefore that we continue to develop the position of the trainee voice in the delivery of our programmes in Kent, Surrey & Sussex, and aspire to make it as efficient and effective as possible. Patients and colleagues would expect little else. A summary guidance is provided below. It should be read in conjunction with Section 7 of the Gold Guide. The ARCP provides a formal process which uses the evidence gathered by the trainee, relating to his/her progress in the training programme. It should normally be undertaken on at least an annual basis for all trainees undertaking specialty training and will enable the trainee, the Postgraduate Dean and employers document that the competencies required are being gained at an appropriate rate through appropriate experience. Further information regarding ARCP including the ARCP Guidelines 2012 can be found here: http://kssdeanery.org/arcp Revalidation is the GMC’s new way of regulating doctors to give extra confidence to patients that their doctors are up to date and fit to practise. The GMC is rolling out revalidation across the UK from the end of 2012. Further information regarding revalidation can be found here: http://kssdeanery.org/revalidation LEP Visit, Diary and training The GMC has defined a framework for quality assurance of training. KSS will need to ensure within this framework that there is a clear set of standards for trainers and training environments and that evidence of educational delivery is shared. The function of KSS visits to a Local Education Provider (LEP) is to ensure that Trusts with trainees have mechanisms in place to allow training to be adequately delivered across all specialties. Further information regarding dates and training can be found on the website at: http://kssdeanery.org/quality-management/visits-local-education-providers Trainee Rep Induction Pack V4 June 2013 13 As a trainee representative, you may be asked to participate on a LEP visit for your specialty. The role of the trainee representative is to actively ensure that the trainee voice is heard during the visit and in the follow up report. You will be allowed to question trainees, trainers and senior managers on various issues to ensure that trainees are working in an environment that is conducive to acquiring the skills and knowledge as set out in the respective specialty curriculum. Training is given to all those who participate on the visits. The hope is to appoint one Trainee Representative who will serve in post for one year. In addition, there will be one Deputy Trainee Representative who deputise for one year before taking on the role of Trainee Representative in their second year, at which time a new Deputy will be appointed. This is a challenging and exciting role, and a unique opportunity to act as representation for all trainees within KSS Deanery. There are direct inputs into the ‘Generation E’ project, and being involved gives the post holder a unique total view of Deanery work. What is ST&EAG? KSS Deanery convenes the Specialty Training and Education Advisory Group (ST&EAG) in order to support and enhance the work of all specialty schools and associated committees in KSS Deanery, to solve educational problems and advise on matters relating to specialty training and education. The group meets every second month and is chaired by the Deputy Postgraduate Dean for Secondary Care, Kevin Kelleher. Its remit is to: Provide an advisory forum for issues generic to the specialty schools in KSS Deanery Accept and update the operational guides for the schools, including inclusion of mandatory quality control issues which go to the KSS Quality Management Steering Group Ensure high quality liaison with LEPs, their LABs and LFGs, and enhance Contract Review Ensure delivery of curricula in liaison with Royal Colleges, Specialty Advisory Committees and Faculties Respond to all issues and queries related to the Gold Guide. ST&EAG membership comprises Heads of School from all KSS Specialty Schools, as well as representatives from KSS Education and Quality teams, and HR, IT, Trusts and Foundation School on a more flexible basis as the need arises. Eligibility Eligibility is limited to current KSS Managed trainees who will continue to be so for the full term of the role. Trainee Rep Induction Pack V4 June 2013 21 Role Summary About the person KSS managed secondary care senior trainee ST4 or above within KSS Deanery. Welldeveloped presentation skills are essential. Term One year acting as Deputy, followed by one year acting as Trainee Representative. In this first year, the Trainee Representative role will be for one single year. Commitment Attendance at 6 ST&EAG meetings a year at KSS Deanery, London Bridge (historically this has been taken as study leave). In addition time spent coordinating projects for the Deanery including the ongoing trainee voice project, facilitating workshops at Deanery events ( TPD training days, trainee rep trainee days and the annual Deanery conference). All travel expenses are funded by the Deanery separate to study leave. Benefits Benefits include greater understanding of Deanery organisational functions and roles within the Deanery, leadership opportunities, project management and representing the views of all the trainees within KSS to the Deputy Postgraduate Dean and Heads of School. The post holder can use this experience to demonstrate Leadership skills both at interviews and within their own specialty training. A message from the previous post holder During my 2-year tenure as ST&EAG Trainee Representative I set up and ran the trainee voice survey, a survey aiming to capture the views of all the secondary care specialist trainees within KSS by surveying the 158 LFG and specialty school reps. I analysed the data and the results were presented to ST&EAG and actions agreed upon by the Heads of School. There are further moves to include future survey results in commissioning of education across the deanery. As a result of the survey, a LFG data collection pro forms has been produced for use by reps prior to LFG meetings. In addition the Deanery now holds all of the contact details of trainee reps across the Deanery and this data will continue to be collected and held at the Deanery. The next phase of the project is likely to involve a more focused survey in the coming year, building on the first survey, with specific questions be addressed covering various domains included in both the LFG pro forma and the GMC survey. This is a challenging role, which requires good organisational skills and time management, however the rewards are multiple. The opportunity to run a large scale project is unusual as a trainee and allows for the development of multiple leadership skills.
