UWF Chemistry Scholars Program Fall 2013 Statistics There are 30 Chemistry Scholars currently enrolled in the program. The average GPA of the currently enrolled Chemistry Scholars is 3.65. Of the 30 Chemistry Scholars, 13 are ethnically under-represented and 27 are considered under-represented according to the National Science Foundation, which includes ethnic minority and female students in its consideration. To date, 75 percent of Chemistry Scholars graduates are enrolled in PhD or MD-PhD programs. Five Chemistry Scholars have been awarded national American Chemical Society (ACS) Scholarships through the ACS Scholars Program in the past two years. Eight Chemistry Scholars have participated in summer research programs off campus at Research-1 institutions over the past two years. One Chemistry Scholar was accepted to the DOW-MIT ACCESS Program Since Spring 2012, Chemistry Scholars have presented research posters at national conferences: o 21 research posters have been presented by 17 Chemistry Scholars at American Chemical Society National Meetings o 4 Chemistry Scholars will present research posters at the Southeastern Medical Student Symposium in October o 3 Chemistry Scholars will present their research at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students in November. To help support the Chemistry Scholars Program, the Jerome E. Gurst Excellence in Chemistry endowment was established in Fall 2011 to assist under-represented, high-achieving students in chemistry who are interested in pursuing a PhD or MD-PhD. The endowment was established through generous support from Mike and Holly Summers. Currently the endowment has $36,000 pledged, $9,000 of which was pledged by faculty in the UWF Department of Chemistry.
