The 30-Hour Course
Who should attend the 30-hour course?
16 and 17-year-olds who want to:
*get a license four or more months after receiving their permit, and
*qualify for a reduction on their insurance.
Can I start the class before I am 16?
No, you must be 16 years of age to attend the class.
Do I need a learner's permit to attend the class?
No, you don't need your permit to attend the class. You will, however, need your permit
when you begin your in-car driving lessons.
How many classes do I need to attend for the 30-hour course?
The 30-hour course is divided into 14 two-hour classes,(28 hours). Each student will
receive a Drive Right text book and will be required to complete chapters 1 through 15.
A 2 hour Parent Class (one parent or guardian) is required, this will complete the 30
hours.
Can I attend more than one class per day?
16 and 17-year-old students may attend up to four hours of classes per day when
school is not in session (week-ends, summer, school holidays). On school days,
students may only take a two-hour class. Not exceeding more than 6 hours per week.
Students 18-years of age and older, there is no restriction on the number of class hours
per day.
When can I start class?
We have open enrollment, classes are roll-over. You can begin any Monday or
Wednesday, unless a parent class is scheduled .Class time begins at 5:00 pm. and
ends at 7p.m.
Do I need to attend class is a consecutive order?
No, for your convenience, you can put together a schedule of classes that works best
for you.
Do I need to sign up for each class, I have to attend?
No, once you have registered for the course with a parent or guardian, the only class
that requires you to pre-register for is the Parent Class. You will be responsible for
signing in on the sign in sheet when coming to each class. If you do not sign in you will
not receive credit for that class.
If I miss a class how do I make it up?
Yes, you will be able to make up class once all other classes have been completed.
Your teacher will cover all of the material you missed and you will receive credit for the class
you missed. If the Parent Class is missed you can register for the next scheduled date.
The 8-Hour Safe Driving Course for
Teenagers and Adults
Who should attend the 8-Hour Safe Driving Course?
Any new driver who does not take the full Drivers Education Course or any driver who
wants to get a license six or more from the issued date on their permit.
Can I start the course before I am 16?
No, you must be 16 years of age to attend the class.
Do I need a learner's permit to attend the course?
No, you don't need your permit to attend the class.
How many classes make up the 8-Hour Course?
16 and 17-year- old students who take the 8-hour course, class is divided into 2-two
hour classes and 1-four hour class, one of the 2 hour class, a parent or guardian is
required to attend. For students 18 years and older class are divided into 2- four hour
classes.
Do I need to sign up in advance for each class that I want to attend?
No, but if you pre-register you will be guaranteed a spot in that class. We do except
walk-in’s and space is limited.
Can I reschedule class is need to?
Yes, as long as you give us a call at least 24 hours in advance, or there may be an
additional fee.
The DMV Off-Site Road Test
Who is eligible to take their DMV Road Test at Tom’s Driving School?
The following individuals can take their Road Test at our facility:

Any 16 or 17 year old student who has completed the 30-Hour Course with us,
completed at least eight hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with us, and has
held their permit for at least four months.

Any 16 or 17 year old student who has completed the 8-Hour Course with us,
completed at least two hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with us, and has
held their permit for at least six months.

Any or 18 year-old driver who has completed the 8-Hour Course with us,
completed at least two hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with us and has
held their permit for at least three months.
Do I use my own car for the test?
No, you will use one a Tom’s Driving School vehicle for the test.
Does my parent need to be with me for the test?
No, your parent will fill out all of the necessary paperwork before your test date. They
do not need to be with you on the day of your test.
How long does the test take?
We can accommodate up to 15 students per test day. Test times start at 8:00am and
continues until 11:45 (Student test times are booked on a first come/first serve
basis.) The test itself takes about 15 minutes.
If I pass, when do I get my actual license?
You can pick up your license at the Norwalk DMV office two days after you pass your
Road Test at our facility?
What do I need to bring to the DMV to get my actual license?
You will need to bring your permit, the evaluation sheet from the DMV Inspector once
you have passed your test, your drivers education certificates(CS-1) and 2 pieces of
mail with current postmark.
What happens if I fail my Road Test?
You can take the test again as soon as two weeks later.
