ST. JOHN’S UNITED CHURCH October 5, 2014 10:30 a.m. Rev. Dr. Heather Froats Worship Leader - Lillian McNamee Guest Organist: Ann Macdonald THE GATHERING WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS; BIRTHDAY & ANNIVERSARIES LIGHTING THE CHRIST CANDLE CALL TO WORSHIP The grace of our Savior Jesus Christ, and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. PRAYER OF APPROACH Leader: The Word of God is a letter of love. All: It is addressed directly to us. It is carried to us by Christ. Leader: Through worship and service, we open it up. In so doing we open ourselves. All: The message of love gets written on our hearts. We become as loving letters created to deliver the good news. With glad and grateful spirits, we gather to worship our loving God, who send us like joyful letters into a waiting world. HYMN: One More Step Along the World I Go 1 One more step along the world I go, one more step along the world I go, from the old things to the new, keep me travelling along with you: #639 And it's from the old I travel to the new; keep me travelling along with you. 2 Round the corner of the world I turn, more and more about the world I learn; all the new things that I see you'll be looking at along with me: R 3 As I travel through the bad and good, keep me travelling the way I should; where I see no way to go you'll be telling me the way, I know: R 4 Give me courage when the world is rough, keep me loving though the world is tough, leap and sing in all I do, keep me travelling along with you: R 5 You are older than the world can be, you are younger than the life in me, ever old and ever new, keep me travelling along with you: And it's from the old I travel to the new; keep me travelling along with you. PRAYER OF CONFESSION O God, Author of life itself, how grateful we are that you have inscribed our spirits with freedom and have written your love upon our hearts. You have given us the good Word that takes shape through the choices we make and that finds expression in the deeds we do. Forgive us when we allow our lives to become entangled in selfish desires or complicated relationships. May we become people who share blessings, seek justice, pray with conviction and serve with devotion. We offer this prayer in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. WORDS OF ASSURANCE THE WORD PROCLAIMED KIDS’ TIME HYMN: Tell Me the Stories of Jesus #357 1 Tell me the stories of Jesus I love to hear, things I would ask him to tell me if he were here: scenes by the wayside, tales of the sea, stories of Jesus, tell them to me. 2 First let me hear how the children stood round his knee, and I shall fancy his blessing resting on me; words full of kindness, deeds full of grace, all in the lovelight of Jesus' face. 3 Tell me, in accents of wonder, how rolled the sea tossing the boat in a tempest on Galilee! And how the Master, ready and kind, chided the billows and hushed the wind. 4 Into the city I'd follow the children's band, waving a branch of the palm tree high in my hand; one of his heralds, yes, I would sing loudest hosannas! Jesus is king! 5 Show me that scene in the garden of bitter pain; and of the cross where my Saviour for me was slain. Sad ones or bright ones, so that they be stories of Jesus, tell them to me. SCRIPTURE: Psalm 23 John 10: 1-7, 11-15 Rosemarie Dow ANTHEM: Lamb of God Duet: Christopher Coyea Alex Fleuriau Chateau Arr. Nystrom SERMON WE RESPOND TO THE WORD HYMN: He Leadeth Me 1 He leadeth me: O blessed thought! O words with heavenly comfort fraught! Whate'er I do, where'er I be, still 'tis God's hand that leadeth me. He leadeth me! He leadeth me! By his own hand he leadeth me! His faithful follower I would be, for by his hand he leadeth me! 2 Sometimes 'mid scenes of deepest gloom, sometimes where Eden's bowers bloom, by waters calm, o'er troubled sea, still 'tis his hand that leadeth me. R 3 Lord, I would clasp thy hand in mine, nor ever murmur nor repine, content, whatever lot I see, since 'tis my God that leadeth me. R 4 And when my task on earth is done, when by thy grace the victory's won, even death's cold wave I will not flee, since God through Jordan leadeth me. R OFFERING #657 HYMN: Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures high and low; give thanks to God in love made known: Creator, Word and Spirit, One. #541 PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE LORD’S PRAYER CLOSING HYMN: All the Way My Saviour Leads Me 1 All the way my Saviour leads me; what have I to ask beside? Can I doubt his tender mercy who through life has been my guide? Heavenly peace, divinest comfort, here by faith in him to dwell, for I know, whate'er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well. 2 All the way my Saviour leads me, cheers each winding path I tread, gives me grace for every trial, feeds me with the living bread. Though my weary steps may falter, and my soul athirst may be, gushing from the rock before me, lo, a spring of joy I see! 3 All the way my Saviour leads me; O the fullness of his love! Perfect rest to me is promised in my Father's house above. When my spirit, clothed, immortal, wings its flight to realms of day, page 914 #635 this my song through endless ages, 'Jesus led me all the way!'
