Picture Arranging

A bare wall, like a blank page, represents an opportunity waiting to be explored. But a
bare wall can also feel like a daunting opponent, especially if you're unsure how to hang
your pictures for maximum effect. If your walls look a bit empty, a striking arrangement
of pictures will give a warmer, more lived-in look to your surroundings.
1. Galleries and Patchworks
For a modern and arresting "gallery" effect, frame a series of photos in identical square frames
and space them evenly along a wall. Use this arrangement to draw the eye in a particular
direction, emphasizing different lines of a room. Arrange pictures in a horizontal line to
emphasize the length of a living room, for instance, or in a vertical line to accent the height of a
foyer or stairwell.
On the other end of the spectrum from the gallery look is the "patchwork" effect: a free-form,
kaleidoscopic cluster of pictures in different sizes and shapes. You can use one unifying element,
such as a dominant color in the artwork, or frames made of a particular material, such as wood or
metal. A patchwork arrangement works best on a wall painted in a neutral color such as white or
cream, so that the pictures and frames don't clash with their background. To plan the
arrangement, clear a large space on the floor in front of the wall where you'll be hanging the
pictures. Then lay the pictures out on the floor, swapping them around until you have an
arrangement that you like. (If you have a dark-tinted carpet or dark wood floors, you might want
to put down a white sheet or blanket first, to get a better sense of how the pictures will look on
the wall.) Begin hanging the frames at the approximate center of the arrangement and work
outwards. Step back and check the placement of each picture before continuing to the next one.
2. Creating a Focal Point
Hanging one huge photo or piece of artwork on a wall by itself creates an instant focal point. The
bigger the picture, the more dominant it will be. Before you buy that over-sized artwork, make
certain that it won't clash with the rest of the room's decor. Also, keep in mind that the image will
set the mood for your room. A large, colorful abstract can add energy to a living room. An
enlarged poster of Edward Munch's "The Scream," however, may cause your guests to flinch.
If you like informal, constantly changing surroundings---and if you excelled at dioramas in grade
school---give picture rails a try. Picture rails, also called picture ledges, are long, thin shelves
only a few inches deep, with a rolled or curved lip. Framed pictures and other objects perch on
the rail with their top edges leaning against the wall and the bottom edges against the lip. Since
the pictures aren't permanently affixed to the wall, you can move them around on the rail. You
can even overlap the edges of pictures to create a layered effect. If the rail is deep enough, you
can add objects such as small vases or curios for a casual and eclectic display.
