Course Description:
Algebra I is a high school level math course that will allow for four years of college preparatory
mathematics courses in high school. This is a rigorous course designed to attract and keep students
in mathematics. This course is NOT meant to get Algebra I “out of the way.” This course is the
foundation for high school mathematics courses and mastery of the lessons taught is
expected. Students will also be held responsible for 8th grade math material, and will take the
PARCC Assessments at the end of the year for both 8th grade and Algebra I.
*If the student is not showing successful progress prior to the end of the first semester, it is
suggested that the student move into an appropriate level course to strengthen their mathematical
skills and then take Algebra the following year. Changing the schedule does not guarantee the exact
same teacher per course.
The Curriculum
The curriculum correlates with the Common Core State Standards.
Algebra Overview:
Seeing Structure in Expressions
 Interpret the structure of expressions
 Write expressions in equivalent forms to solve problems
Arithmetic with Polynomials and Rational Functions
 Perform arithmetic operations on polynomials
 Understand the relationship between zeros and factors of polynomials
 Use polynomial identities to solve problems
 Rewrite rational functions
Creating Equations
 Create equations that describe numbers or relationships
Reasoning with Equations and Inequalities
Understand solving equations as a process of reasoning and explain the reasoning
 Solve equations and inequalities in one variable
 Solve systems of equations
 Represent and solve equations and inequalities graphically
Mathematical Practices
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
6. Attend to precision.
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.


Course Outcome
Students will
• Study the mathematical concepts that are important for today
• Learn to apply these concepts to solve different types of problems
• Develop skills in reasoning and problem solving strategies
• Use these skills to solve real-world problems
• Communicate orally and in writing
• Study and learn independently and as a team member
Homework Expectations
 Homework must be completed on time.
 Homework mistakes are discussed in class every period
 Homework should be an extension of learning and a time to take risks while solving
problems!
 All homework errors should be corrected by redoing the problems correctly after
checking answers.
*Some mathematical concepts are difficult in nature, so I make myself available before school, at
lunch, and by appointment. Please feel free to contact me or encourage your child to come see me if
they are having any problems.
*If a student does not turn a homework assignment, the student’s ROAR card in their agendas
will be signed under the Missing Assignment (MA) portion. It is 8th grade policy to receive detention
after the third missing assignment.
Classroom Guidelines:
1. Be in your assigned seat and working on the assigned bellwork when the tardy bell
rings.
2. Bring ALL books and materials to class and take them with you when you leave.
3. Follow directions the first time they are given.
4. Treat each person in this room with respect and dignity.
5. Follow all procedures and policies as outlined in the school handbook.
Following guidelines will result in verbal acknowledgement, a stress-free learning
environment, and a pleasant and orderly classroom atmosphere.
NOT following classroom guidelines will result in:
First: Warning and Documentation (Guideline Infraction Notice)
Second: Roar Card signature
Third: Action Plan, Parental Contact, Lunch Detention
Fourth: Disciplinary Referral
Seating:
Will be assigned. Special requests for seating closer to the board will be accommodated.
Seating assignments may change from time to time.
Grading:
Summative Assessments (Tests, Projects, Performance Assessments) 50%
Quizzes
30%
Formative Assessments (Homework/Classwork)
20%
