Which Species to Save

Battlefield medics, conservationists are being forced to explicitly apply triage to
determine which creatures to save and which to let go

Endangered species for its importance to its ecosystem, its economic and
cultural value, and its potential to serve as a conservation emblem

The decisions being made by scientists was difficult and involved voting several
times by assisting their statements with reasoning

Entire groups of species, including storm-petrels, were deemed valuable but not
valuable enough, a scientist would quietly shut down, shoulders slumped and
eyes glazed. “I’m just overwhelmed,” he or she might say

As budgets shrink, environmental stresses grow, and politicians and regulators
increasingly favor helping the economy over helping the planet, many scientists
have come to acknowledge the need for triage

The concept of conservation triage is based loosely on medical triage, a
decision-making system used by battlefield medics since the Napoleonic Wars

Medical triage has several variations, but all of them involve sorting patients for
treatment in difficult situations. The decisions are agonizing but are considered
essential for the greater good

All species are fundamentally equal, and everything can and should be saved,
regardless of its importance to humans.

Trouble arose in the late 1980s, when proposed endangered-species listings of
the northern spotted owl and some salmon varieties threatened the economic
interests of powerful timber and fishing industries, setting off a series of
political and legal attempts to weaken the law

Environmentalists fought off the attacks, but the bitter struggle made many
supporters suspicious of any proposed changes to the law, even those intended
to increase its effectiveness

proponents feared that any overt attempt to prioritize endangered species - to
apply the general principle of triage - would only strengthen opponents’ efforts
to try to cut species from the list

Conservationists who are pushing for explicit triage say they are bringing more
systematic thinking and transparency to practices that have been carried out
implicitly for a long time

In recent years researchers have proposed several ways to make triage
decisions, with the aim of providing maximum benefit for nature as a whole

Which Species to Save

Threatened species with a unique job, they say, or “umbrella” species whose
own survival ensures the survival of many others, should be protected before
those with a so-called redundant role

The advantage of this function-first approach is that it focuses on specific
ecological roles rather than raw numbers of species, giving conservationists a
better chance at protecting functioning ecosystems

Given the importance of protecting not simply individual animals but also the
relations among them, some researchers say that triage approaches should
select among ecosystems instead of species.

Rather than focusing on well-known species with many near relatives, the
EDGE program favors the most genetically unusual threatened species
Summarize the AUTHOR'S main point or idea:
This article explains the different methods used to find out which species has a better
chance of survival and is fit better to its community. A method used in battlefield
known as triage is used to determine who has the best chance of being saved and who
doesn't. These choices are made by which soldiers can be more effective and have
more potential to keep going through the struggle. This term is now being applied
to conservation, and which endangered animals that play the largest role in their
community should be maintained for its survival. This is known as "function first"
among which species has the most important role, or helps keep a balance in its
ecosystem. There's also the alternative of using "evolution first" meaning which
species has a chance for more diversity. This method is being used now under the
conditions of the most benefit, cost, and the best chance of survival.
Write a reaction paragraph to the article stating your own thoughts on the topic,
using specific citations from the article to support your views:
I was very unaware of the methods being used and how these endangered animals are
selected for their survival. I am able to understand why it is being used, but I am also
sure that it is not the best solution. Some of the reason it is being used is for profit,
and this includes other factors as well. There are sacrifices that have to be made in
order for the world to thrive, but there should be a better alternative used instead
of triage to help the situation and make better choices.
