Northern Virginia Urban League – 2011-2012 Scholarship Competition
 Award: $5,000 (4-8 Scholarships awarded)
 Deadline: Friday, January 27, 2012
 Eligibility: African American High School Seniors graduating from an accredited public or private High School in
Northern VA, accepted to or have applied to an accredited college/university in the US, plan to enroll in a fulltime college program leading to a bachelor’s degree, and be an African-American student who is a US Citizen
 Applicant must have a minimum 2.5 GPA in an academic course of study
 Must have a typed essay on the topic of: “Discourse in America’s recent history has taken on a more adversarial
tone between both parties as well as within parties. Do you believe this change in attitude is true to the heart of
the average American citizen or a show for political gain? What role, if any, do media outlets play in the
fostering of this attitude?”

The Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Virginia – History Essay Contest for College Scholarship










Open to any Virginia High School Senior who will attend any four-year college or university in the
commonwealth of Virginia beginning in the fall of 2012.
The essay topic is about a historical document that has played an important role in the establishment of our
nation. This year’s topic will be: The Declaration of Independence.
The essay should be written for the benefit of someone who has never studied The Declaration of
Independence. It should address the ideas in the document that were important to Americans during the latter
half of the 18th century and should explain why these ideas remain important today.
Judging will be based on originality, organization, development, and style
Entries should be limited to 1,500 words, excluding citations, and should be typed, with double spacing and oneinch margins, on one side of white letter sized paper.
Each submission should be an original essay written for this competition. All quotations or paraphrases must be
appropriately cited in footnotes. Entrants may discuss the development of their essays with peers, parents,
and/or teachers, but essays must be work of the contestants themselves. No editorial assistance is permitted.
Society will award for scholarships of $3,000
The society will notify the award winners by mail or telephone by May 15, 2012, and awards will be publicly
announced at a ceremony at the state Capitol in Richmond in late May or early June 2012.





Three to five $700 scholarships will be given out to local high school seniors for winning entries of a written
essay (not to exceed 1000 words) answering the following question: “What is success and how do you plan on





















Applicants must be students currently in grades 9-12 living in the US or Puerto Rico. Students from public,
private, alternate or home schools are eligible to apply.
Must have a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
Must demonstrate commitment to and involvement in community volunteer service or work experience
Planning on entering a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two or four-year College,
university, vocational-technical school or online school/program in the United States or Puerto Rico following







ACT or SAT scores, Two letters of recommendation, an essay which describes the specific person, situation or

Manassas Chapter, Virginia Division United Daughters of the Confederacy – Effie Lee Nelson Speiden Scholarship








Awarded to a local high school female student
Applicant must be eligible for membership in the UDC (for scholarship eligibility, young women must be a direct
descendent of a confederate soldier or of a person who provided tangible aid to the confederacy)
Be a resident of Manassas, Manassas park, or Prince William county
A graduating high school senior with a GPA of 3.0 or higher; and
Be accepted by an accredited Virginia college or university for full-time attendance during the 2012-2013
academic year
Committee may require an interview with each applicant. The winning student would be notified by the
Scholarship Committee

Prince William Art Society, Inc. – Jewell Pratt Burns Art Scholarship 2012






Award of $1,000.00 for two outstanding 12th grade students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts or Art
Education
Students should send Intent to Apply letter postmarked by March 12, 2012, containing a simple statement of
intent, such as “I intend to apply for the Prince William Society Art Scholarship” along with their name and
contact information so they can be contacted with any necessary changes or updated information to ensure that
their final portfolios can be returned to them after the selection process.
Students should prepare and mail or hand deliver their final application materials to be received on or before
the Deadline of - April 10, 2012
Students must be recommended by his/her art instructor based on the student’s talent, potential and their
desire to go forward in the field of Visual Arts. This recommendation must be signed by the art instructor and
must include the art instructor’s contact information (email and phone number).
Student should submit a digital portfolio that includes five pieces of their original artwork in the student’s choice
of media. The portfolio should be on CD/DVD at least 5X7 / 300 pixels. Each art piece should be identified by
media and date of completion.








Award a total of 30 scholarships of $4,000 in May 2012 to deserving high school seniors throughout the










Award amount - $1,000 – non-renewable
Must be a VA High School Senior who is planning an aviation career in a non-engineering area.
A certification of acceptance into a non-engineering, aviation-related post-secondary education program is
required. Examples of non-engineering careers include pilots, aviation maintenance technicians, aviation
managers, etc.
Applicants must have an unweighted GPA of at least 3.5





Calvin College – Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Scholarship







Awards six $2,500 scholarships to incoming first-year students who are interested in studying one of the basic
sciences or mathematics at Calvin
Purpose of the HHMI Scholarship is to provide tuition assistance to students who plan to major in: Biology,
Chemistry, Physics, or Mathematics and plan to pursue a career in research or post-secondary education
Student may receive a scholarship for a maximum of four-years; scholarship renewal after the first year is
dependent upon successful demonstration of adequate academic progress toward career goals.
Scholarship awarded entirely on academic merit, not on financial need,
Students in professional programs such as pre-medicine or engineering are not eligible for the scholarship
Eligibility – must be admitted to Calvin College by January 31, intend to major in biology, biochemistry,

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) Organization
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund is the largest scholarship-granting organization in the nation. HSF provides
financial assistance to outstanding Hispanic students in higher education throughout the United States and
Puerto Rico. The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) has awarded over $45,000 scholarships totally $60 million. For

HSF/Clorox Gracias Mamá Scholarship Program




The program will award five Latino high school seniors with $12,000 each for the 2012-2013 year. Applicants
must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Applicants are required to submit a 500-word essay detailing the role their mother or mother figure has played
in their education. Fifteen finalists will be selected and given a camera to create a video on how their mother
influenced their decision to attend college. The videos will be uploaded to the Clorox Latino Facebook page for
fans to support their favorite finalists. Five winners will be selected based on HSF selection criteria. In addition to
the $12,000 scholarship, each will receive a $500 spa day certificate for their mom

scholarships



Pridemore Scholarship: Tuition award - $2,000, renewable for three additional years. Total award over four
years: $8,000
GeorgAnne Voland Buck Scholarship: Tuition award: $1,400 (first year only)
To be eligible: Minimum GPA of 3.3 and a combined SAT score of 1100 or an ACT of 24 and the ability to
demonstrate an outstanding level of achievement in theatre through the presentation of an audition or portfolio
are required. The student must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, good conduct ad consistent involvement in
theatre to renew the scholarship each year.


Washington Regional Transplant Community (WRTC): Legacy of Life Scholarship





Mid-Atlantic Christian University – Christian Character and Leadership Scholarship






Students must attend Mid-Atlantic Christian University in order to receive this scholarship
Offers two award levels of: $15,000 and $10,000
Scholarships based on academic, outstanding character and leadership qualities. Scholarship will be
allotted over a period of four years of either $1,875 per semester or $1,250 per semester
The scholarship will continue to awarded as long as student maintains the specified GPA of 3.0 or 2.5
while enrolled at Mid-Atlantic Christian University and be enrolled for a minimum of 15 credit hours per
semester

The National Hispanic Caucus of School Board Members Scholarship Program
 The National Hispanic caucus of School Board Members will offer ten scholarship awards for high school
senior. The scholarship awards are distributed to two students within each of the five National School
Boards Association regions.
 Eligibility: Students must be of Hispanic origin; graduate high school in 2012; must provide proof of
acceptance to an accredited post-secondary institution, and the student must have a 2.5 GPA or higher
on a 4.0 scale
 Applicants will be evaluated on academic record, demonstrate financial need, extracurricular activities,
personal qualities, and extra points will be awarded to education majors
 Students must provide two letters of recommendation from non-family members. Recommendations
should speak about the student’s academics, plans and/or goals, personal strengths, and extracurricular

Northern Virginia Electric Cooperation (NOVEC) Scholarship



Will award $1,500 scholarship to two high school students in each of the counties where NOVEC provides
electric service – Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, Prince William, Stafford, and the City of Manassas Park
Additionally a $1,500 Garber scholarship is awarded to the top outstanding student. After the scholarship
selection is completed, another review will be conducted of the winner, and scholarship honors totaling $3,000
will be awarded to the top student.
Students must be a college-bound high school senior who home is currently served by NOVEC












Awarded to graduating high school seniors who are students from prince William County Public High School.
Award will be $1,500 educational scholarship

education can impact their future success.
