Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional
education and research across 3 campuses in the northeast of Melbourne and statewide. Austin Health is world-renowned for its research and specialist work in cancer,
liver transplantation, spinal cord injuries, neurology, endocrinology, mental health and
rehabilitation.
An exciting opportunity currently exists for an enthusiastic Intensive Care Registrar to
join our team at the Austin Intensive Care Unit.
Details of Department:
The Austin Intensive Care Unit is a 21-bed unit that admits about 2100 patients
annually, with occupancy of about 6200 bed days and 2200 MET calls. The unit is a
general adult surgical/medical ICU including cardiac surgery. It is also the state referral
centre for spinal cord injuries, liver transplantation and acute liver failure. The ICU runs
a medical emergency team, and also takes part in the hospital cardiac arrest and trauma
teams.
The Austin ICU is accredited by the College of Intensive Care of Australia and New
Zealand as a C24 Training Institution
Position
Summary Details of position/position requirements:
ICU registrar (including Senior ICU registrar positions)
Applicants should fulfil the following criteria:

Medical practitioners registered (or registrable) in Victoria.
Completion of 3 years HMO training.
Desire to formally train or gain experience in intensive care.
Key Responsibilites will include:
•
•
•
•
•
Providing care for patients in the intensive care and high dependency units
under the supervision of the intensive care consultant. This care includes the
assessment of patients, formulation of management plans, co-ordination of
patient management, and performance of ICU procedures.
Participation in unit ward rounds and clinical meetings.
Participation in emergency resuscitation as a member of the Austin Hospital
medical emergency, cardiac arrest and trauma teams.
Assessment and management of patients referred by emergency department
and other hospital units
Taking part in the transport and retrieval of critically ill patients.

medical and nursing staff.
Demonstrated ability to participate in a complex care team environment
