Technology Lesson Grades 2nd-5th Week of February 2nd-5th Title: Celebrities Bridge Technology Standards: 1.1.2 1.1.3 2.2.3 3.2.2 3.2.3 3.2.4 4.4.1 5.5.1 Lesson #1 (2-2) Objective: Students will identify one celebrity and print at least two pictures from the internet. Materials: Printer Construction Paper Glue INTRODUCTION: 10 min. 1. Welcome the students to computer class. 2. Gather students on the carpet and remind them of the 4 B’s (Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Proactive) 3. Explain to the students that this week they are going to write a letter to their favorite celebrity. The goal for today is to choose a celebrity and find 2-3 pictures of him/her. 4. Brainstorm some celebrities with the class and write them on the white board. (It can be people or cartoons) *Please remind students that once they select a celebrity, they cannot change the person. Example: Peyton Manning Katy Perry Selena Gomez Justin Beiber Julius Thomas MODELING: 10 min. 1. Gather the students around 1 or two computers. 2. Model how to go to Google.com, click on images at the top left. 3. Type in a celebrity’s name in the search box. 4. Model how to right click and choose “copy” 5. Model how to open Microsoft Word and paste the celebrity picture. 6. Model how to make the picture larger and smaller. Explain to students that they will only be allowed to print one page so all of their pictures need to fit on one page. 7. Model how to cut out and glue the pictures onto a piece of construction paper. *The students need to glue the pictures around the edge or at the top and bottom of the page because their letter is going in the middle. INDEPENDENT WORK: 15 min. 1. Dismiss students to their computers in an orderly way. 2. Assist/monitor students while they search a celebrity and paste pictures. 3. Assist/monitor students while they print and cut out their pictures. *Make sure students put their name on the back of the paper for tomorrow. REFLECTION: 5 min. Lesson #2 (2-3) Objective: Students will compose a rough draft letter to a celebrity of their choice. Materials: Lined paper Pencils INTRODUCTION: 5 min. 1. Welcome the students to computer class. 2. Gather students on the carpet and remind them of the 4 B’s (Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Proactive) 3. Explain to the students that they are going to be writing their rough draft letter to the celebrity today. MODELING: 10 min. 1. Ask students to give you a name of a celebrity. 2. Model how to write a letter to the celebrity. Opening (Dear ___________________,) 2-3 sentences introducing themselves (My name is Sam and I am 7 years old. I live in Denver, Colorado and go to Bridge every day). *4th -5th grade students can write more 2-3 questions (Do you like being famous? Where do you live? What is your favorite color/animal? Etc…) Closing (sincerely, love, from) Signature (your name) 3. Please make sure to emphasize punctuation and spelling(commas, periods, capitals) 4. Explain to student that this will be a rough draft and tomorrow they will write the final copy. INDEPENDENT WORK: 12-15 min. 1. Pass out lined paper and pencils. 2. Assist/monitor students while students write their letters. *If students finish early, they can read other students letters and look for spelling/grammar errors. REFLECTION: 5 min. Lesson #3 (2-4) Objective: Students will modify their rough draft letter and type their final copy. Materials: Printer Paper Celebrity Construction Paper INTRODUCTION: 10 min. 1. Welcome the students to computer class. 2. Gather students on the carpet and remind them of the 4 B’s (Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Proactive) 3. Explain to the students that today they will be finishing their celebrity letters. They will make a final copy of the letter, print it out, and glue it to the construction paper with the pictures of the celebrity. 4. Review the directions for writing a letter and what needs to be included. Opening (Dear ___________________,) 2-3 sentences introducing themselves (My name is Sam and I am 7 years old. I live in Denver, Colorado and go to Bridge every day). *4th -5th grade students can write more 2-3 questions (Do you like being famous? Where do you live? What is your favorite color/animal? Model how to type the letter and change the font/size. 4. Model how to print the letter. 5. Model how to cut and paste the letter in the middle of their construction paper. INDEPENDENT WORK: 12-15 min. 1. Dismiss students to their computers in an orderly way. 2. Assist/monitor students while they type their letters. REFLECTION: 5 min. Lesson #4 (2-5) Objective: Students will present their celebrity letter to the class and explain why they chose that person. Materials: Celebrity Pages INTRODUCTION: 10 min. 1. Welcome the students to computer class. 2. Gather students on the carpet and remind them of the 4 B’s (Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Proactive) 3. Explain to the students that today they are going to be sharing their letters to their celebrities to the class. 4. Brainstorm with the class why it is important to practice public speaking. 5. Brainstorm with the class how they should act when someone is presenting. (mouths quiet, listening ears, etc….) MODELING: 20 min. 1. Gather the students on the floor. 2. Model how to present a celebrity page. First, introduce your celebrity (my celebrity is _________________). Tell why you chose him/her (I chose Katy Perry because _______). Hold the page out for the class to see the pictures. Read the letter REFLECTION: 10 min.
