WINTER CARNIVAL
WHEN: SAT, FEBRUARY 1st
WHERE: JONES PARK
TIME: 1:00-3:00 pm
2013 WMH Annual Picnic Fun!
A beautiful evening made for another terrific neighborhood picnic at Henderson Park.
Neighbors arrived in droves with a side dish to share, K College supplied burgers, hotdogs,
drinks and plates/plasticware, and many tennis tournament players and their families attended.
There was a raffle, kids’ games, good conversations, lots of laughter, and a visit by Public
Safety Officers and their assistants – furry and metal. This event has been a neighborhood staple
for about 40 years.

Harvest Moon Square Dance
At least 100 neighbors of all ages attended this fun event that was brought back after many
years’ hiatus. The predicted storms held off so we were able to enjoy the brisk fall air in the Tot
Lot on a lovely Saturday evening, September 21st between 6-8 p.m. There were three musicians
from the Farm Brook Band and a "caller" to yell out moves and help neighbors young and old
learn the dances. Games, desserts, and good times were had by all. Thanks to all of you whose
donations made this event possible.

Kalamazoo College News
The turnstile gate into the intramural/recreational field is operational and open from 8AM to 7PM, or during
daylight hours, seven days a week excluding game days. The honor system is in effect for students and
neighbors. Please confine your activities to the recreational field and, neighbors, please give priority to K
students and staff. NO DOGS PERMITTED ANYWHERE ON THE FIELD.
The College may be requesting an amendment to its Master Plan in order to move the site of the new
natatorium from North of the Markin Center to the location of the current natatorium. The College may be
unable to purchase a rental property currently located on the proposed site. Although the College states that
the start date for the project is far off, the College would like neighborhood input as to how many meetings
neighbors/the Board may like in order to discuss the change in the Master Plan if the City does not require
Commission approval for the Amendment, but merely meetings with the potentially impacted Neighborhood
Associations. Other questions include whether the meetings should be held jointly with all the affected
Associations or with each Neighborhood Association separately, who will record the notes of the meetings, and
which Neighborhood Associations should be involved. Please contact a Board Member with your input.
Neighbors,
Greetings from your West Main Hill Neighborhood Association Board of
Directors. We hope that you've enjoyed the events that we have organized
over the past year. We were able to sponsor the Winter Carnival, the
Easter Egg Hunt, the Ice Cream Social, and the Neighborhood Picnic. In
addition, we were able to resurrect the Harvest Moon Dance, which proved
to be a great success. Thanks to Scott, Rebecca, Connie, Pete, and the
numerous picnic volunteers for making these events so much fun.
Along with the cost of our newsletter, these neighborhood events are
virtually the only expense that the Association has, but our treasurer informs
us that we are close to spending more than we take in. You may not realize
that your donations are the only source of income for the association. No
funding is received from the city, county, or state.
If you haven't had the chance to do so yet this year, please consider this
opportunity to make your donation to the WMHNA. You may use the
envelope enclosed with the newsletter, or feel free to make a Paypal
donation at the WMHNA website, which is found at
http://wmh.webnode.com/ .
Our suggested donation is $25 per household, but no larger amount has
been refused.
Our goal is to raise $800 by January 15.
Please help to continue making West Main Hill the special neighborhood
that it is.
Yours,
Mark Sloan, President
WMHNA Board of Directors
