FAQs: Q. I am a Mongolian and I don’t have a crease on my upper eyelids. Is it possible for me to have one like my Aryan friend? A. Yes, you can have upper eyelid crease by a 30min-1 hour procedure called Double Eyelid Blepharoplasty. Having said that, there is a limit to how much is achievable and what will suit a patient. A Mongolian eye with crease will look better than an Aryan eye on a Mongolian face. You can check the before and after photos of the same procedure here. Q. Is the surgery painful? A. Thank god to the Anesthetic drugs, surgeries are not painful. All the surgical procedures are either done under Local Anesthesia or General Anesthesia according to the need and sometimes on patient’s preference. In local anesthesia, only the area to be operated is made painless; in General Anesthesia the patient is made unconscious for the required period such that the patient has no memory or pain of the surgery. Q. If I am planning for a Blepharoplasty. How many days of leave should I ask from my work? A. Normally a blepharoplasty is done under Local Anesthesia, and the patient is sent home the same day as the operation. However normal activities are to be limited for at least 2 weeks. Q. He is now 3 yrs, but we want to correct it before he goes to school. When is the right time to go for it? A.The condition is called Microtia. And yes there are options for him through Plastic Surgery. But unfortunately you will have to wait until your son is at least 7-8 yrs of age. Because only by that time the growth of the ear will reach almost as the adult size so, that the new reconstructed ear will not have much discrepancy once he grows older. We can do reconstruction using his own rib-cartilage or medpor or silicone framework and taking the normal side ear as a reference. I have been to one of the cosmetic clinics to remove a small tattoo on my hand. They suggested to go with the Laser treatment and claimed it will be removed in one sitting. They also showed me their catalogues of earlier cases. So, I sat down for a session. After 1week, the skin started to peel off but the area around also became dark. They told me to wait. Now 3 months has passed, the tattoo is partially gone but the skin around it is still dark as if an ugly patch. Is this normal and go away if I wait longer? A. This is one of the examples of Quackery going around in our city. While there are laws against such activities, the more effective way is that the patient is aware and conscious about one’s body and health. In simple words Laser is a wave of energy like heat wave that can penetrate certain layers of tissue. While it is used to remove the unwanted tissue, if the uncontrolled beam of energy is released , then the surrounding healthy tissue will be damaged temporarily or permanently, like it happened in your case. For this reason, you have to be conscious before letting anyone work on you. Always ask about the type of machine they are using, make sure that the brand is reliable and maintains the FDA certification plus the staffs should be well trained.
