PREPARATION FOR FACILITATION: Please review and be familiar with the following: CCSS norms,
3 key shifts, and the 4-5 CCSS

MATERIALS TO BE COPIED FOR PARTICIPANTS: Each participate should have a copy of the
following: Earthforce in the Crust Text, Earthquakes Text, On the Richter Scale Text, Writing
Research Simulation Task, & CCSS

OVERVIEW OF THE MODULE: Individually, participants complete a task that emulates the PARCC
Research Simulation Task and reflects the key shifts in CCSS for ELA instruction. In small groups,
participants reflect on the skills students need to be successful on the task and align the task to
grade-level standards.

CLARIFY any questions participants may have about the norms. EXPLAIN that we will be
using these norms throughout our work together and will be checking in from time to time
to see that we are following the norms.

they have about the shifts?

Have them review and discuss, in their groups, what they notice about the CCSS.
