Looking Up Rachel Averill (3/7) Terry Clark (3/17) Luck Last time, in “Looking Up”, I introduced you to Sara Mea. She is an alum of the UMF UB program, and we are both work-study students at Look House right now. It also happens that Sara and I both live in the same Residence Hall on campus. Our conversations often drift to Upward Bound, given our involvement. Our conversations often drift to Upward Bound, and it’s really interesting to talk about our experiences with the program, and what its lasting effects have been for us. A common agreement between us is that we are both so incredibly lucky to have been selected to be a part of the program to begin with, and then again when we applied to for Work-Study at Look House. It seems to be a trend among all UB alums, that is, the recognition of the luck that we had when it came to getting in to the program. Now that I have taken the time to reflect on what luck is, I consider the phrase “a lucky twist of fate” to be more appropriate. Why? Because while UB is a lucky experience for us all, fate instills a drive for success. With fortitude, we find the keys to success, but without our own drive and our motivation, how successful could we possibly be? ~Kris Kelley UB Work Study Student University of Maine Farmington Upward Bound 238 Main St., Suite 1 Farmington, ME 04938 Phone: (207) 778-7296 Toll free: 1-888-237-1667 TDD: (207) 778-7000 Nadia Tag (3/17) Kaitlyn Virgin (3/25) Karissa Murphy (3/31) Contents “Look!” – 2 March Reunion - 3 April Reunion – 4 TRiO Day – 5 Student News - 6 UB’er, Jenna, of Oxford Hills, presents Keene State College’s Interim President, Dr. Jay Kahn, with a TRiO shirt at TRiO Day! “Look” who else is new! Mary Sinclair is a New Sharon native. She attended the University of Maine at Farmington, and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Rehabilitation Services. With her diploma in hand, she ventured to Alabama. She worked with Americorps to help rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. Her other work experience includes work with Volunteers of America, in Alabama. She worked at a campground and helped run a summer camp, also while in the Heart of Dixie. Back in Farmington, Mary worked for LEAP (a group home). It’s been clear to her for a while that she is most interested in helping people. That’s what has brought here, to Upward Bound! Fun Facts: Mary has a dog, Zoey. Mary spent a semester in Colorado doing practicum at an adaptive sports center. She is the middle of five kids. She has also been Shrimping! Interests of Mary’s include: Western Maine Life (Being Outdoors, Swimming, Skiing, Being Active, & Snowshoeing) and she especially enjoys Field Hockey. She played for UMF and currently coaches Mt. Blue’s JV team! Check out this new logo that Elyse came up with for Upward Bound, representing the addition of the Foothills Upward Bound! TRIO Day Adventures in New Hampshire Alisha Fox Is there ever a dull moment when you’re gathered with other UBers? Not a one, that’s for sure. Over vacation two vans full of fellow UBers, Including the new students from the River Valley program, went to TRIO Day. I sure hope that they had a warm welcoming. We left Wednesday and headed to Portsmouth, New Hampshire. UNH; if you’re looking for a college with a large variety, you should check it out. Step two; some good ol’ entertainment provided by UNH students in the drama department. Day two, Elyse and Camille would never let the fun stop now would they? Off to the official Trio Day fun in Nashua! You think that there is a large variety of us at UB; we joined nearly 600 other Trio Day members to go on college tours. Now this would have to be my favorite part. I mean, it’s lunchtime and we get to check out the food at a college that we are considering. You want to make sure that it can almost compare to a nice homemade meal. After a tour on the college you get to head back to more adventures. We had an amazing keynote presentation showing us that we are not the only one’s that may face challenges heading into college and the real world. Now, it’s never all so serious... There’s some play time too. There were multiple activities going on; game room, movie, Jeopardy, and of course a dance with an actual DJ. Day three, oh it’s not over yet. We get to enjoy some fun games to make learning about financial aid or SAT’s. Then a college fair with many collages from throughout the area. This gave those of us that were there more opportunities to learn about each other’s experiences and hear what they have to say about college and things you should consider in the process of looking. Now it’s time to say goodbye to all of our new friends; but don’t worry, the fun has yet to end. We get to go out to lunch at an amazing Chinese Buffet, my favorite! I’d have to say van ride bonding and conversations have to make the trip even better. I’m not one to enjoy sitting for a long time but everyone’s personalities kept my mind preoccupied. So if you don’t like traveling, give it a try with Upward Bound. Not only do you get to learn more about life opportunities, but you can actually enjoy yourself while doing it. I hope you all consider going on one of these lovely adventures; trust me, there’s some crazy moments that you just cannot put onto paper. -Travis Stuard is student of the month at Mt.
