Biology Honors/Academy Summer Project
One of the branches of Biology that you will study this year is Ecology, which is the scientific study of interactions among
organisms and between organisms and their environment. For this assignment, you are to construct a food web for any
of the following biomes:
Tropical rain forest
Tropical dry forest
Tropical grassland/savanna/shrub land
Desert
Temperate grassland
Temperate woodland and shrubland
Temperate forest
Northwestern coniferous forest
Boreal forest
The food web MUST include 6 producers, 6 primary consumers, and 6 secondary consumers. The food web can contain
tertiary consumers or beyond if you know them. You must label the producers, primary consumers, and secondary
consumers. You can draw or print out pictures of the producers and consumers. If you draw, make sure you draw
neatly and color it so it looks nicer. If you print out pictures, cut and paste neatly. Color pictures would be best.
Whether you draw or cut and paste, you must draw arrows in so that you can see how the energy moves through the
system (who eats whom).
Some definitions that may help you:
Food Chain - series of steps in an ecosystem in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten
Food Web - network of complex interactions formed by the feeding relationships among the various organisms in an
ecosystem
Consumer - organism that relies on other organisms for its energy and food supply; also called heterotrophs.
Producer - organism that is able to capture energy from sunlight or chemicals and use it to produce its own food from
inorganic compounds; also called autotrophs.
Biome - a group of ecosystems that share similar climates and typical organisms
Ecosystem - all the organisms that live in a place, together with their nonliving environment
You can search food webs in any of these biomes on the internet and get really good information.
THIS PROJECT WILL COUNT AS A TEST GRADE AND WILL BE DUE ON THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS.
