Problem Set #4
Advanced Mesoscale Meteorology
METR 6413, Sec. 1
Howie “Cb” Bluestein
Handed out: Tues., 13 Oct. 2015
Due: Tues., 20 Oct. 2015
1. Consider the Rapid City, SD sounding for 21 Dec. 1990 at 1200 UTC (plotted in
Fig. 2.19f on p. 262 of Vol. II). If a mesoscale disturbance in the surface pressure field is
noted moving to the north-northeast at 20 m s-1, could it be a ducted gravity wave? Why
or why not?
2. Consider the Norman, OK sounding for 21 Dec. 1990 at 1200 UTC (plotted in Fig.
2.19c on p. 261 of Vol. II). If a mesoscale disturbance in the surface pressure field is
noted moving to the northeast at 20 m s-1, could it be a ducted gravity wave? Why or why
not?
3. For the soundings above in which ducted gravity waves are possible, compute and
compare the gravity wave speed to the ducted gravity wave speed.
