2nd Year Ecology Ecosystem _____________________________________ Location _____________________________________ Name ____________________________________ Date ____________________________________ School ____________________________________ Procedure 1. Familiarise yourself with all procedures before starting. 2. Name the selected ecosystem. 3. Draw a map/sketch or give a written description of the selected ecosystem. 4. Record Abiotic factors; soil temperature, air temperature, light intensity and aspect 5. Estimate the number of plants in the habitat using a quadrat 6. Identify any five fauna in the selected ecosystem, using an identification key. Site Description 1. 2. 3. 4. Abiotic factors Soil Temperature Air Temperature (using data logger and temp probe) Light intensity (using data logger and light probe) Aspect (direction the habitat is facing) Site Map CONDUCT A QUANTITATIVE STUDY OF PLANTS IN A SAMPLE AREA OF THE SELECTED ECOSYSTEM (a) To estimate the frequency of plants Materials/Equipment Frame quadrat Procedure 1. Familiarise yourself with all procedures before starting. 2. Select the sample area in the ecosystem and mark it off. 3. Throw a pen over your shoulder and place the quadrat where the pen lands. 4. Record the plants present on the table below. 5. Repeat the above process ten times ticking the number of times the plant appears and adding to the list if it is absent. 6. Calculate the percentage frequency of each of the plants in the habitat. Conclusion/Comment Plant Identification Identify three plants from your habitat Animal Identification Identify three plants from your habitat Procedure 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Name each piece of apparatus chosen. Draw a sketch and give a written description of each piece. Use each piece of apparatus appropriately. Describe how you used each piece. Record the type of organism collected by each piece.
