The course reviews structural options, faculty/staff supervision, budgeting in higher education, and assessment practices regarding administration. III. Justification First-year curricular and extracurricular initiatives are administrated within a variety of structures and educational environments, yet lack of a specific administrative structure or leadership can inhibit their growth and effectiveness. This course will utilize a case study approach to show that while there is not a “one-size-fits-all” approach to initiatives for first-year students, there are best practices within both academic affairs and student affairs. As more institutions develop specific entities (i.e. divisions, departments, offices, or colleges) to administer first-year curricular initiatives such as first-year seminars and learning communities as well as extracurricular initiatives such as academic advising and living/learning communities, there will be increased need for trained administrators.
