As a jewelry artist, as well as a proprietor of the bead shops Land of Odds and Be Dazzled Beads, he has learned about the intricacies of how beads are made, the materials and techniques involved, how beads are assembled into finished jewelry, and how jewelry is designed from inspiration to finished product to sales. He has studied beading and jewelry-making cross-culturally, both across geographies, as well as time periods. In 2000, Warren founded The Center for Beadwork & Jewelry Arts (CBJA), an educational program for Be Dazzled Beads in Nashville, TN. The program, and its instructors, approach education from the Design Perspective – a teaching focus on how to manage the functional, material and aesthetic choices and decision making process involved in creating bead art. Warren’s commitment and concern for the "teaching of beadwork" resulted from watching and talking, over the years, with customers in the bead shop, who had taken classes elsewhere, or tried to teach themselves from books. These beaders were not buying parts or using parts to their best advantage. It was obvious that many people had taken classes, but that they weren't necessarily learning. They were memorizing steps, rather than integrating organized processes of thinking, thus designing. In 2008, Warren’s “Canyon Sunrise” necklace was selected as Finalist, 4th Place, in SWAROVSKI’s Be Naturally Inspired Design Contest. His piece "Little Tapestries/Ghindia" — was juried into the book SHOWCASE 500 BEADED JEWELRY, Lark Publications. 2012. He is working to bring the CBJA curriculum online as LearnToBead.net. He is currently writing a jewelry design series entitled “How To Bead A Rogue Elephant.” Warren’s ideas about “unity in design” summarized in the chapter "The Ugly Necklace Contest," in The Beader's Guide To Jewelry Design, Margie Deeb, 2014. His project "Gwynian Ropes Bracelet", in the international beadweaving magazine Perlen Posie, No. 21, 2014. Owner, Designer and Instructor, Be Dazzled Beads in Nashville, and Land of Odds (www.landofodds.com) OnLine. Director, Jewelry Design Camp. Administers three international contests: The Ugly Necklace Contest, All Dolled Up-Beaded Art Dolls, and Illustrative Beader-Beaded Tapestries. Member, Nashville Fashion Group. Faculty Instructor with CraftArtEdu.com. Instructor, Nashville Community Education. Develop video tutorials about business of craft and about jewelry design projects. 2 EXAMPLES OF CRUISE SHIP ACTIVITIES Warren Feld, Jewelry Designer A. JEWELRY MAKING AND BEADING CLASSES ON THE SHIP A. JEWELRY MAKING AND BEADING CLASSES ON THE SHIP Jewelry Making Classes are of interest to adults, young adults and children. Depending on the situation, students either pay an instructional fee, or these fees are included as part of their tour package. These particular classes are more oriented for adults and young adults. Classes which last 2-3 hours are done in one session. Class which last longer than 3 hours are typically spread out over 2 or 3 sessions. Written instructions are provided. Tools are provided for communal use. Supplies are purchased by students from the instructor, either in the form of “kits” or as a “materials fee” where they pick and choose their own parts from the equivalent of a mini-store I bring with me. Would probably arrange some kind of Show-And-Tell party on or near last day of cruise for students to show off what they’ve made. I teach over 40 different jewelry making classes, at all skill levels. Examples listed below: (1) Let’s Make Earrings (2) Learn to Crimp for Bracelets and Necklaces (3) Curvy Right Angle Weave Bracelet (4) Pearl Knotting (5) Monet’s Garden Bracelet (6) Etruscan Collar (7) Etruscan Square Stitch 3 EXAMPLES OF CRUISE SHIP ACTIVITIES Warren Feld, Jewelry Designer A. JEWELRY MAKING AND BEADING CLASSES ON THE SHIP CLASS 1: LET’S MAKE EARRINGS (2 hours) Beginner Level First Pair – Beads on Head Pin Second Pair – Beads Off a Chain DESCRIPTION: Earrings are fun to make, whether to match an outfit, or give as a gift, or sell for profit! In this class, we learn two basic earring making techniques which are simple to do. In the first technique, you will learn to create a dangle on a head pin, then make a loop on the end of the head pin, when then is attached to a French earring wire. In the second technique, you will learn to make a dangle off a piece of chain, and then attach to a French earring wire. TYPICAL FEES: $20.00 per student instructional fee $12.00 per student materials fee 4 EXAMPLES OF CRUISE SHIP ACTIVITIES Warren Feld, Jewelry Designer A. JEWELRY MAKING AND BEADING CLASSES ON THE SHIP CLASS 2: LEARN TO CRIMP NECKLACES AND BRACELETS (3 hours) Beginner Level DESCRIPTION: Crimping is one of the fastest and easiest ways to string beads to make bracelets and necklaces. However, you need to learn some jewelry design tricks to best secure the clasp to the wire using crimp beads, make the ends of your pieces look professionally finished, and allow your pieces to move the best and drape the best when worn. In this class, learn to string beads on flexible cable wire, learn the 4 steps to the crimping process, and learn how to use horseshoe wire protectors and crimp covers for that finished look. TYPICAL FEES: $30.00 per student instructional fee $18.00 per student materials fee 5 EXAMPLES OF CRUISE SHIP ACTIVITIES Warren Feld, Jewelry Designer A. JEWELRY MAKING AND BEADING CLASSES ON THE SHIP CLASS 3: CURVY RIGHT ANGLE WEAVE BRACELET (3 hours) Beginner Level DESCRIPTION: In bead weaving, we use needle and thread to construct bracelets and necklaces. The Right Angle Weave stitch is one of the most popular stitches. In our “Curvy” bracelet, we learn the basic stitch. We construct a single row of right angle weave units to the bracelet length we want. Then we embellish the edges to give the bracelet its “Curvy” action. Last, we learn how to attach a button clasp and bead-weave a clasp loop. TYPICAL FEES: $30.00 per student instructional fee $12.00 per student materials fee 6 EXAMPLES OF CRUISE SHIP ACTIVITIES Warren Feld, Jewelry Designer A. JEWELRY MAKING AND BEADING CLASSES ON THE SHIP CLASS 4: PEARL KNOTTING (4 hours) Beginner Level DESCRIPTION: Classic Elegance! Learn a simple Pearl Knotting technique anyone can do. No special tools. Beautiful. Durable. Wearable. This non-traditional pearl-knotting instructional class and guide teaches this technique from the design perspective -- that is, an easy-to-do method which takes into account both aesthetic as well as functional considerations. TYPICAL FEES: $35.00 per student instructional fee $38.00 per student kit 7 EXAMPLES OF CRUISE SHIP ACTIVITIES Warren Feld, Jewelry Designer A. JEWELRY MAKING AND BEADING CLASSES ON THE SHIP CLASS 5: MONETS GARDEN BRACELET (6 hours spread over 2 sessions) Intermediate Level DESCRIPTION: This Monet’s Garden Bracelet is a fun bead weaving project that students love. It is for students who have some familiarity with bead weaving and an obsession with colors. This bracelet teaches a mathematical approach for organizing several colors within a color blending scheme. The techniques here are Square Stitch and Fringing. TYPICAL FEES: $45.00 per student instructional fee $89.00 per student kit fee 8 EXAMPLES OF CRUISE SHIP ACTIVITIES Warren Feld, Jewelry Designer A. JEWELRY MAKING AND BEADING CLASSES ON THE SHIP CLASS 6: ETRUSCAN COLLAR (8 hours, spread over 2 sessions) Intermediate/Advanced Level DESCRIPTION: Create a sophisticated, contemporary Etruscan-style collar! Layer two Ndebele stitched strips slightly curving the interior edge and embellishing with chain. The challenge here for me, was to create a sophisticated, wearable and attractive necklace piece that exemplified concepts about contemporizing traditional Etruscan jewelry. Contemporizing traditional jewelry has to do with how you take these particular traditional forms and techniques, and both add your personal style, as well as make them more relevant to today’s sense of fashion and style. The challenge for the designer is how to keep traditional ideas essential and alive for today’s audience. TYPICAL FEES: $95.00 per student instructional fee $200.00 per student kit fee 9 EXAMPLES OF CRUISE SHIP ACTIVITIES Warren Feld, Jewelry Designer A. JEWELRY MAKING AND BEADING CLASSES ON THE SHIP CLASS 7: ETRUSCAN SQUARE STITCH BRACELET (5 hours spread out over 2 sessions) Intermediate Level DESCRIPTION: Wear your inner Etruscan metalsmith! Design a Square-Stitched frame of faceted metal beads surrounding a rich vein of faux gemstone squares. This is a fun bracelet project, using the square stitch. The Square Stitch is a very basic stitch. The beads line up along a grid of parallel rows and perpendicular columns, where each square represents one bead. The Square Stitch can utilize patterns developed for Cross Stitch, Loom, or Knitting patterns. Design Elements Discussed: boundaries, frames, negative spaces, shapes, textures. TYPICAL FEES: $35.00 per student instructional fee $70.00 per student kit fee 10 EXAMPLES OF CRUISE SHIP ACTIVITIES Warren Feld, Jewelry Designer B. LECTURES ON HISTORY OF JEWELRY OR CONTEMPORARY JEWELRY DESIGN B. LECTURES ON HISTORY OF JEWELRY OR CONTEMPORARY JEWELRY DESIGN These talks about jewelry and jewelry design involve a mix of oral presentation, slide presentation and round table discussions. Most lectures are two hours, usually about 1 to 1 ½ hours of presentation, then a 30 minutes to an hour of discussion. Typical charges: $25.00 per person per lecture with 8 person minimum. might be packaged as a series. Lectures Equipment needs: Ideally, a projector where I can hook up my lap top computer and run a slide presentation, like on PowerPoint. With slide presentation, need to easily be able to dim and raise lights in the room. I routinely give talks on 6-8 jewelry design topics. I would also see myself developing talks about the history and contemporary jewelry scene in specific cities or countries. So, for example, before the ship arrives in port in Istanbul, I would conduct a lecture on the history and contemporary jewelry scene in Istanbul and/or Turkey. EXAMPLES OF LECTURES LISTED BELOW: (1) Contemporizing Traditional Etruscan Jewelry (2) Is Jewelry “Art” or “Craft” (3) Mixed Media Art (4) Buying Gemstone Beads and Pearls 11 EXAMPLES OF CRUISE SHIP ACTIVITIES Warren Feld, Jewelry Designer B. LECTURES ON HISTORY OF JEWELRY OR CONTEMPORARY JEWELRY DESIGN LECTURE 1: CONTEMPORARIZING TRADITIONAL ETRUSCAN JEWELRY (2 hours) We look at examples of Etruscan and Roman jewelry. We evaluate these pieces in terms of the norms of traditional jewelry design. Then we ask how we can let the “traditional” design elements influence us in redesigning them as contemporary pieces – more relevant to today’s styles, fashions and contemporary design principles. 12 EXAMPLES OF CRUISE SHIP ACTIVITIES Warren Feld, Jewelry Designer B. LECTURES ON HISTORY OF JEWELRY OR CONTEMPORARY JEWELRY DESIGN LECTURE 2: IS JEWELRY “ART” OR “CRAFT” (2 hours) Traditional art historians do not consider jewelry to be “art”. They see it merely as “craft”. In this discussion, we review the critical ideas about jewelry of several art historians. We discuss the differences among “craft”, “art” and “design”. Then, as a group, we begin to define and clarify ideas where we define jewelry as an “art form”. 13 EXAMPLES OF CRUISE SHIP ACTIVITIES Warren Feld, Jewelry Designer B. LECTURES ON HISTORY OF JEWELRY OR CONTEMPORARY JEWELRY DESIGN LECTURE 3: MIXED MEDIA ART (2 hours) It is difficult to mix techniques and it is difficult to mix materials within the same piece of jewelry. We explore some of the underlying art and design concepts and approaches to understand both how mixed media can impede, as well as enhance, a piece of jewelry. 14 EXAMPLES OF CRUISE SHIP ACTIVITIES Warren Feld, Jewelry Designer B. LECTURES ON HISTORY OF JEWELRY OR CONTEMPORARY JEWELRY DESIGN LECTURE 4: BUYING GEMSTONE BEADS AND PEARLS (2 hours) There are many types of gemstones and pearls. But buying them, in a smart way, requires a little extra knowledge and insight. It is important to know each gemstone’s story – where it comes from, whether it has been treated in some way, whether it is natural, synthetic or fake. In this discussion, we go over the stories of some of the more prominent ones. We go over the various treatments companies apply to gemstones. We go over how to spot “faux” gemstones and pearls, and tell them from “real” ones. We review steps people need to take to care for and store their gemstones and pearls. 15 EXAMPLES OF CRUISE SHIP ACTIVITIES Warren Feld, Jewelry Designer C. The marriage between the Scognamiglio family and the world of cameos and corals dates back to the late 1857. The History is very intricate and lasts one and half century. The factory is located in Torre del Greco, Italy, the capital city of coral and cameos, nestled between the foot of Mount Vesuvius and the Mediterranean Sea, overlooking the bay of Naples. SHOPPING IN GALLERIES, SHOPS, STUDIOS OR MARKETS SPECIALIZING IN ARTISAN JEWELRY OR BEADS AND BEADING SUPPLIES (PRE-, CONCURRENT or POST-ESCURSIONS) D. SHOPPING IN GALLERIES, SHOPS, STUDIOS OR MARKETS SPECIALIZING IN ARTISAN JEWELRY OR BEADS AND BEADING SUPPLIES (PRE-, CONCURRENT or POST-ESCURSIONS) I am a jewelry designer who has worked extensively with bead stringing, bead weaving, micromacrame, wire working, silversmithing. I have taught classes and written columns about different aspects of jewelry design and jewelry making history. I have owned a bead store for over 28 years, buying gemstones, glass, pearls, porcelain, bone and wood beads from many countries around the world. With this expertise and experience in mind, I lead groups on tours of galleries, shops, studios or markets specializing in artisan jewelry. And I lead shopping trips for the purchase of beads and beading and jewelry making supplies. I bypass the types of places you can find anywhere in the world. Most of these tours or shopping trips involve walking. The walking routes are typically 1 to 1 ½ miles long. I usually schedule most tours/trips for about 5 hours, encompassing a lunch or dinner break. Galleries and shops in many cities do not keep regular hours, and this time-frame and meal-break allows for some necessary flexibility en route. I particularly like to give my guests a full experience of local artisans, a variety of jewelry making styles and materials, more focused on medium to very high end pieces. Some artists work in a traditional or contemporized traditional style pertinent to the city/country they are in; some present their unique styles; some are avant-garde. Most guided tours focus on galleries and jewelry artisan studios. I assist in the jewelry-buying process, evaluating things like quality, cultural significance, artistic merit, and suggesting things to consider and choices to be made by the customer. I assist in the negotiation process, if need be. Some cities are known for particular jewelry making products, such as beads or stringing materials, or silver work. I lead the group on shopping trips. I use my wholesale credentials to get into wholesale-only shops. I assist in the buying process, evaluating whether buying here is a better deal than buying from home. I assist in the negotiation process, if need be. Typical galleries tour charges: $100.00 per person ($150.00 per couple) with 5 person minimum. Typical shopping trip charges: $35.00 per person with 5 person minimum. 19 EXAMPLES OF CRUISE SHIP ACTIVITIES Warren Feld, Jewelry Designer D.
