Mapping Memory in Guatemala: Daniel Herndanez-Salazar’s work Para que Todos lo sepa/ So that All shall know and the forensic archives of genocide. A Proposal Veronica Perry Mills College 11 October 2011 Running Title Abstract Mapping the sites of Daniel Hernandez-Salazar’s photograph Para que Todos lo sepan/ So that All shall know, which was posted in site specific public spaces to address the fear and silence of the military genocide in Guatemala during 1960’s to 1990’s and the impunity of those groups who carried out those human rights violations. Additionally, mapping the location of the mass graves from the military violence throughout the country and the current data compiled to complete the memory of those who were killed during that time and document the actions of the state-sponsored military violence. Introduction In this project I will use GIS to study the geography of memory in Guatemala regarding the social and cultural aftermath of genocide. This will be done by mapping the works of two “memory workers”; Guatemala Forensic Anthropology Foundation – FAFG, and Daniel Hernandez-Salazar. The spatial distribution of the works by photographer and photojournalist Daniel HernandezSalazar will be mapped to demonstrate one artist way of addressed the cultural and social silence and fear from genocide. Mapping the data from FAFG will give a spatially understanding of the genocide in Guatemala. Research Question or Purpose of Project Maps and Analyses List/description of maps you might make and analyses you might conduct. Data Sources Where will you get base maps? Where will you get data? Include screen shots where you can. Include URLs and copy and pastes of sources. Be sure to keep enough info that you can properly document things and easily find them again. Exemplars Do you want to do a project that is just like something? Or just like something but different. Time Line 18 October –finalize the project idea. 25 October- collect data: sites of artwork and graves, numbers of people in graves. 1 November –collect and apply data 2 Running Title 8 November - apply data 15 November – finalize maps and data 22 November – finalize project. 29 November Presentations 6 December Presentations References Hoelscher, Steven.
