Flooding Procedure To prevent the nursery from flooding all staff should ensure the risk assessment is carried out every morning before the nursery is opened. This list will entail all outdoor areas where there will be risks of floods such as the drains and anywhere inside such as toilets and sinks. If a flood warning has been made then all toilets and sinks need to be blocked/covered with sand bags. The surrounding area where the flood water is due to rise should be cordoned off by sand bags, these areas are likely to be by the outdoor playing area and the drains. Keep all doors and windows closed to prevent the water from entering the building. If there is risk of flood in the area, Andy will need to be called so he can fit non-return valves to drains and water inlet and outlet pipes. This will prevent wastewater from flowing back into the property through sewerage pipes for ground floor toilets and sinks. To prepare yourselves for a flood, each room should create a ‘flood bag’ containing; Gloves A torch Blankets Waterproof clothing Wellington boots A mobile phone with internet connection for updates First aid kit Contact numbers for parents Snacks/water for staff and children What to do if there is a flood If any water is found in the building or the surrounding area that could cause a flood the Manager and Director are to be informed immediately. The electrics need to be turned off at the mains; go to the cupboard in Boppers by the fire exit and you will find 2 metal boxes in front of you , each box has a large metal handle pointing upwards, you need to pull the handle firmly so the handle is pointing downwards (6 o’clock) and the red panel will say ‘off’. Switch off the gas at the mains. Place plugs in all plug holes. In the event of a flood the Children are to be evacuated to the preschool room upstairs and all rooms are to take their flood bags with them. Collect any salvageable equipment and medical supplies, considering those children who have epipens. All Parents of the evacuated children are to be called and asked to collect their children as soon as possible. The emergency services are to be called and request the fire rescue department (call 999). If you have touched flood water you should wash your hands immediately. Ensure all children who may have touched the flood water have washed their hands.
