Antigone Part 2 Per 2 SOAPSTone Subject: Antigone feels like Polyneices (her brother) deserves to be buried Creon is trying to make an example of a traitor Occasion: two brothers killing each other or Polyneices death, or Creons refusal to let Polyneices get buried, or Eteocles failing to share the throne. Creon: Polynieces killing his king, or Polynieces attacking Thebes. Audience: Antigone, Ismene, Creon, Readers, and the Chorus Creon: Sentry, Chorus, Reader, and Antigone Purpose: She wants her brothers soul to be saved. Creon: He is trying to prevent others from becoming traitors to Thebes Symbol: Religious freedom but also individual freedom. Creon: Patriotism Nationalism Authority Tone: Confident, Fearless Antigones fatal flaw is that she cares to much, she’s to loyal and devoted. Creon: Angry, contained, and stress Antigone’s argument Creon’s Argument Haimon’s Argument Teresias’s argument 824 Ode 1 Chorus [Strophie 1] Celebrating the accomplishments of man. Chorus [Antistrophie 1] Man has conquered have learned to feed off of animals of the air, sea, and land. Chorus [Strophie 2] Man has weapons to defend ourselves but can’t escape death. Chorus [Antistophie 2] Rejection of anarchy. At this point the city favors Creon. Scene 2 Creon discovers that Antigones was the person attempting to burry Polyneices’s body. Antigone is proud of what she did (Sophicles, L73-81). Creon seems disappointed and annoyed. (Sophicles, L8794) Antigone Subject: She wants to bury Polyneices and the right to honor her religious beliefs. Antigone said “No one shall bury him, no one morn for him, he will be a sweet treasure for carry on birds.” (Sophocles, L20-21) Antigone is describing what will happen to Polyneices if he is not buried to show how horrible that would be. Occasion: Her brother betrayed their family and Thebes. Creon said that Polyneices could not be buried. Antigone said “Polyneices who broke his exile to come back with fire and the sword against his native city and the shrines of his father’s gods.” (Sophocles, L39-41) He went against his city, so he betrayed his city this shows who specifically he betrayed. Audience: She is trying to convince Creon, us the readers, the Chorus, Ismene and Antigone herself. Antigone said “Think death less than a friend? His death of mine is of no importance left my brother lying in death unburied, I should’ve suffered. Now I do not. (Sophocles, L78-81) She is saying that she doesn’t care if she dies but she doesn’t want to see her brother suffer in Hell so she thinks it is worth it. Purpose: To free her brother’s soul. Antigone said “That must be your excuse I suppose. But as for me I will bury the brother I love.” (Sophocles, L67-69) She is saying that no matter what the law says she is going to try and bury her brother. Symbol: Her family before the city, religion vs. the law, Patriotism vs. dictatorship. Antigone said “A true sister, or a traitor to your family.” (Sophocles, L28) “But I will bury him and if I must die I say this crime is holy.” (Sophocles, L57-58) She is saying that she is going to be true to her family even if the city isn’t. Tone: Confident and fearless. Antigone said “Creon is not strong enough to stand in my way. Creon Occasion: Creon said, “Whose one idea was to spill the blood of his blood and sell his own people into slavery-Polyneices, I say, is to have no burial.” (Sophocles, L41-43) Polyneices betrayed everybody and deserves not to be buried. Subject: Creon doesn’t want anyone to bury Polyneices. Creon said, “Polyneices, I say, is to have no burial.” (Sophocles, L43) Audience: Ismene, Antigone, Guards, the Chorus, and the reader. Creon said “ Tone: Creon said, “The Gods favor this corpse? Why? How had he served them? Tried to loot their temples.” (Sophocles, L122-123) This shows an example of how Creon feels about Polyneices Letter to a Politician: Everything is politics for example our principals deciding that you can’t carry a backpack into a football game is political. I thought it was the state’s decision. It was made by people trying to protect you. They are trying to keep drugs, weapons, ad pop-its out of football games However drugs can be carried in purses and pockets. If someone is crazy and they want to hurt people, they will try anything. Antigone- interpreting challenging text for comprehension and analysis Chorus Subject: god getting angry at man kind Occasion: Creon ordering her death Audience: Ismene, Creon, the people (because it is directed towards everybody), and reader Purpose: the author saying it now because this is the first time Creon defying the gods. Symbol: Creon is a symbol of a bad leader and blasphemy (violating a rule of your religion) Tone: the tone is angry because we’ve never seen Creon’s true colors and now realize he is a horrible leader Chorus Antistrophe 1 Subject: Is Oedipus’s family especially his children are cursed to be enemies of god Occasion: Severity of Creon Audience: Creon, Oedipus, Antigone Purpose: it’s a warning Symbol: of humanity killing what we fear (humans being cowardness)
