Chorus [Strophie 1] Celebrating the
accomplishments of man.
Chorus [Antistrophie 1] Man has conquered have
learned to feed off of animals of the air, sea, and
land.
Chorus [Strophie 2] Man has weapons to defend
ourselves but can’t escape death.
Chorus [Antistophie 2] Rejection of anarchy. At this

Scene 2
Creon discovers that Antigones was the person
attempting to burry Polyneices’s body. Antigone is
proud of what she did (Sophicles, L73-81). Creon
seems disappointed and annoyed. (Sophicles, L8794)
Antigone
Subject: She wants to bury Polyneices and the right
to honor her religious beliefs. Antigone said “No
one shall bury him, no one morn for him, he will be
a sweet treasure for carry on birds.” (Sophocles,
L20-21) Antigone is describing what will happen to
Polyneices if he is not buried to show how horrible
that would be.
Occasion: Her brother betrayed their family and
Thebes. Creon said that Polyneices could not be
buried. Antigone said “Polyneices who broke his
exile to come back with fire and the sword against
his native city and the shrines of his father’s gods.”
(Sophocles, L39-41) He went against his city, so he
betrayed his city this shows who specifically he
betrayed.
Audience: She is trying to convince Creon, us the
readers, the Chorus, Ismene and Antigone herself.
Antigone said “Think death less than a friend? His
death of mine is of no importance left my brother
lying in death unburied, I should’ve suffered. Now I
do not. (Sophocles, L78-81) She is saying that she
doesn’t care if she dies but she doesn’t want to see
her brother suffer in Hell so she thinks it is worth it.
Purpose: To free her brother’s soul. Antigone said
“That must be your excuse I suppose. But as for me
I will bury the brother I love.” (Sophocles, L67-69)
She is saying that no matter what the law says she is
going to try and bury her brother.
Symbol: Her family before the city, religion vs. the
law, Patriotism vs. dictatorship. Antigone said “A
true sister, or a traitor to your family.” (Sophocles,
L28) “But I will bury him and if I must die I say this
crime is holy.” (Sophocles, L57-58) She is saying that
she is going to be true to her family even if the city
isn’t.
Tone: Confident and fearless. Antigone said “Creon
is not strong enough to stand in my way.
Creon
Occasion: Creon said, “Whose one idea was to spill
the blood of his blood and sell his own people into
slavery-Polyneices, I say, is to have no burial.”
(Sophocles, L41-43) Polyneices betrayed everybody
and deserves not to be buried.
Subject: Creon doesn’t want anyone to bury
Polyneices. Creon said, “Polyneices, I say, is to have
no burial.” (Sophocles, L43)
Audience: Ismene, Antigone, Guards, the Chorus,
and the reader. Creon said “
Tone: Creon said, “The Gods favor this corpse?
Why? How had he served them? Tried to loot their
temples.” (Sophocles, L122-123) This shows an
example of how Creon feels about Polyneices
Letter to a Politician:
Everything is politics for example our principals
deciding that you can’t carry a backpack into a
football game is political. I thought it was the state’s
decision. It was made by people trying to protect
you. They are trying to keep drugs, weapons, ad
pop-its out of football games
However drugs can be carried in purses and
pockets. If someone is crazy and they want to hurt
people, they will try anything. Throwing body paint
away. One of your objectives is to complain,
support, argue, reason with, appreciate, thank, or
educate.
Please try to think of 3 topics and 4 questions for
each topic that would help you learn more about
the subject. You will be in the lab on Monday and
go on Procon.org and issues and controversies to
research your topic and you will be creating an
annotated bibliography.
1. Politeness and respect in sports
The ref made a very bad call
There was a rumor that he heard two players
speaking in Spanish he told them to speak
American, they claimed their coach told them to hit
the ref. Whether or not should minor should be
tried as adults?
2. Should someone be required to hand out
marriage licenses if it’s against their religious
beliefs? Pharmacists who refuse to give away
birth control. Should abortion be illegal in
America? These issues are incredibly
complicated. They’re not black and white.
