The exact identity of Absolom Knotts is in doubt. One source
identifies a "James Absolom Knotts, a former Revolutionary soldier..."
and lists his wife as Nancy Ann Myers. Another source lists an Absolom
Knotts, who married Elizabeth Davidson September 16, 1779. A third
source lists an Absolom Knotts, who married Sarah Blackshear. Absolom
Knotts, father of Joseph Knotts, was probably not the same Absolom
Knotts who was the grandfather of William Knotts.
Two sources agree that Joseph Knotts' father was Absolom Knotts.
John Knotts, listed in the 1850 Gilmer County VA census is
tentatively identified as a younger brother of Joseph Knotts.

Absolom Knotts, a son of Joseph and Mary (Arnold) Knotts, was
born in Harrison County Va (WV) December 11, 1830 and died in Calhoun
County WV April 23, 1900. He married Prudence Arnold November 26,
1850. Prudence, a daughter of Simon and Prudence (Webb) Arnold, was
born January 22, 1827 and died May 8, 1911.
At the beginning of the Civil War, Absolom organized Co E 14th VA
Cavalry (CSA) and served as the commander until 1863. After the war,
he was a prominent and successful attorney in Calhoun County.
