BTI Events is thrilled to announce their inaugural “Future Stars of America” Internship, which will
take place during the 2013 Kazan World University Games/Universiade this summer in Kazan,
Russia. This opportunity will provide aspiring sports journalists with a unique training experience
during a major international multi-sport event.
For the 27th Summer Universiade (July 2-15), BTI Events will invite up to 6 females and 6 males to
the Games in Kazan to work alongside Steve Kelley, the USA Team Columnist and Reporter and 30year journalist veteran. The “Future Stars of America” Internship is aiming to include 19 to 25year-old participants who have a passion for sports journalism, broadcasting and photography. For
12 days, they will have full access to competition venues that will allow them to complete daily
projects and reports assigned by our USA Media Team.
KEY ELEMENTS:
Training will be offered in print, photography and broadcast reporting of live events throughout the
Universiade.
The “Future Stars of America” will be required to participate in all daily training sessions and
complete daily reporting assignments. They will stay at the Kazan Courtyard Marriott Hotel, where
they will partake in instructional meetings.
Each participant must sign an agreement setting out the conditions of course participation.
Essential technology needed for the course (printers, internet, WiFi, etc.) will be provided.
However, participants will be required to bring their own personal equipment (laptops, digital
photo and video cameras, voice recorders, etc.) as they seem fit to fulfill their assignments.
This 12-day project will begin with an introduction to the Universiade and the first assignment will
be to cover the USA Team Basketball game on July 4th. All “Future Stars of America” will receive
assessments of their work throughout the Universiade.
Coursework throughout this internship will include basic elements of event coverage, writing,
interviewing, photos and video, and the Internet. Each “Future Star of America” should expect to
participate in all aspects of this program.
COURSE DETAILS
All “Future Stars of America” Interns will undertake both
general and specialized training in various aspects of sports
reporting and the coverage of major events such as the
Universiade. A wide range of tasks will be assigned to gain
as much experience as possible for their future careers and
to spread the message of the 27th World University Games.
The program will help individuals evaluate what makes a
good sports story, how to tell it informatively and
entertainingly, when to look for more background detail
and why accuracy and fairness still remain the foundation
of sports reporting.
