JOB PURPOSE:
To have a clear vision and strategic plan for the delivery of a high quality
provision in the subject, which ensures coherent progression and pathways
from primary through to Year 13.
All teachers work within the statutory conditions of employment set out in the current School Teachers’ Pay
and Conditions Document.
Teachers in the upper pay scale can be expected to make a particular contribution to building team
commitment in line with the statutory requirement to meet threshold standards.
In particular, teachers at UPR3 will:
 provide a role model for professional practice in the school
 make a distinctive contribution compared with other teachers
 contribute effectively to the wider team
In addition to meeting all of the teacher standards relevant to his / her stage of teaching, the Head of
Faculty will fulfil the following role:
Leadership and Management
 Have high expectations of all staff and to improve standards of individual teacher performance by
monitoring achievement of teaching groups and appraisal targets
 Be outward looking, seeking to research and implement the best ideas nationally and internationally
and keep the department and the SLT team up to date with all national developments with regard to
Government changes and exam board requirements
 Produce a Department SEF and Action Plan to reflect department priorities
 Create and maintain effective working relationships by promoting a creative and collaborative
working environment
 Write and maintain a Department Handbook in line with whole school guidance
 Plan purposeful, effective department meetings and designated department time and monitor the
completion of action points set
 Co-ordinate the day to day organisation and management of staff and resources
 Make appropriate arrangements for classes when staff are absent
 Carry out staff appraisal
 Ensure high quality communication and organisation within the team
 Identify individual and whole department training needs and sourcing high quality, cost effective
training or provide high quality INSET using expertise within the department or school
 Meet regularly with TLR post holders within the department to discuss progress and current projects
and set targets for the next phase of development

Achievement and progress
 Complete the exams analysis document in September of each year, evaluate performance, devise
an action plan for improvement and monitor progress towards targets set
 Monitor that all groups of students fulfil their potential in terms of progress, value added and
attainment and lead the drive to address gaps in attainment of underachieving students
 Quality assure the accuracy of progress grades reported to parents and students
 Develop systems and procedures to effectively challenge underachieving students and to
coordinate and record intervention work across the department
 Ensure that assessment is frequent, differentiated to meet the needs of all students, accurate and
used effectively to track student progress
Teaching and Learning
 Be a lead teacher in the subject through outstanding personal teaching
 Monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and learning across the department, through lesson
observations, learning walks, drop ins, work scrutiny and student voice and produce action plans for
improvement
 Address underachievement by helping formulate and promote teaching and learning strategies and
approaches to promote good progress
 Lead on the development of AfL and differentiation
 Monitor that student work (including homework) is marked in line with the whole school feedback
and marking policy
 Ensure that differentiated homework is set according to the whole school homework timetable and
that it extends and reinforces the learning which has taken place in the classroom
 Ensure that schemes of learning promote the use of Assessment for Learning, signpost
appropriately differentiated learning activities and promote challenging, purposeful and enjoyable
lessons which develop students’ ability to work independently
 Lead on the development of extra-curricular activities and cross curricular projects that enrich the
student experience
Maximising department capitation
 Use department capitation effectively to maximise student achievement and experience
 Keep all expenditure within budget limits and to follow the school’s financial procedures and
practices
 Ensure good maintenance of books, materials, equipment and furniture
Staffing
 Liaise with the Deputy Head for Curriculum about staffing requirements, timetabling, rooming
arrangements and curriculum developments
 Participate in the recruitment of new staff by shortlisting and interviewing. Ensure that the
Departmental Information Sheet is up to date and work with the line manager to produce interview
day plans
 Ensure the successful induction of new staff
Climate for learning
 Ensure that the school behaviour policy is used effectively by the department
 Promote a well-ordered atmosphere for learning, ensuring that teaching rooms provide a high
quality environment which stimulates learning
Whole school
 Actively support the development of literacy and numeracy across the curriculum
 Make a positive contribution to the ethos of the school and to the to the school development plan.
 Support the development of whole school and cross curricular initiatives
 Attend and contribute to Curriculum and Strategic Leaders’ meetings and feedback to the
department
 Develop, implement, monitor, evaluate and review Department policies and practices to ensure they
reflect the School’s commitment to raising achievement and providing a high quality education

Review of duties
The specific duties attached to any individual teacher are subject to annual review and may, after
discussion with the teacher, be changed.
