marks. For the extended response questions, a set of guidelines is included rather than a sample

Answers may include: The separation of powers is a fundamental feature of the Australian
constitution that contributes to the promotion and enforcement of rights. By ensuring that power
is shared among the legislature, executive and judicature it ensures that the power is not
concentrated resulting in the application of the rule of law. This in turns limits the abuse of
power which enable rights to be better protected.
