LITURGICAL ROLES
THE LITURGICAL ROLE ASSIGNMENT LISTS ARE AT BOTH CHURCH
ENTRANCES. IF MORE THAN ONE MEMBER OF THE FAMILY
SERVES, PLEASE TAKE ONLY ONE.
As you are aware, we now need five (5) Eucharistic Ministers at each Mass. We
do have volunteers from St. Mary and have managed to complete the list from
September through December.
BUT we do need more. If you are already a Eucharistic Minister, please make
yourself available as a substitute. If you wish to become one, please see Sister
Marlene.
Serving any Liturgical role multiplies the blessing of the celebration of Mass.

TODAY’S GOSPEL
by
Eleonore Stump of St. Louis University
DOES GOD WANT US TO HAPPY?
Does God want us to be happy? How could anyone answer “no”? How could anyone suppose God is
loving if it is not true that he wants us to be happy? And yet look at Christ’s line in the Gospel
Reading. Deny yourself, Jesus tells his faithful followers, take up your cross and follow me.
Denying yourself seems the opposite of going for happiness, doesn’t it? And the cross is an
instrument of torture. Why would God want these things for his people? Does God want us to be
unhappy?
A man divorcing his dowdy wife to marry a much younger, prettier woman explained his decision to
his devastated wife this way: “God wants me to be happy,” he told her, “and I can’t be happy with
you. I will be happy with her.” It seems never to have crossed the mind of this man that God might
have any care for the happiness of his wife. As far as his wife was concerned, the husband’s full view
of the matter could be put this way: “God wants me to be happy, but God doesn’t give a damn about
you.”
The selfishness of this little story is common. But we should not let our familiarity with its callous
disregard for the suffering of others bind us. Whether it is these familiar evils or the terrible shocking
evils we see in the news, these evils show us the sickness of the post-fall human condition. We are
willing to privilege our own power or pleasure over any greater goods, even at the cost of cruelty to
others.
We can’t be happy in this condition. No one can be happy whose heart has deep within it a
willingness to crush others to get what he wants. Well, then, what is to be done with us? What will
make us happy? What will save us from the evil that infects us and leaves us to willing to afflict
others? This is where Christ’s cross comes into the story. Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life (Jn.
14:6) . The cross of Christ is our only route to the happiness God does want for us. Taking up our
cross with Christ is healing for our sinful condition. It is the way to life, and to true joy.
RELIGION CLASSES FOR ADULTS AT ST. MARY,
The Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults will begin the 20142015 year with an inquiry session on Sunday, September 7,
2014 at 11:30 a.m. or immediately following the 10:30 Mass in
church. The session will be held in the meeting room of the
parish offices. Anyone interested in becoming a member of the
Catholic Church or those wishing to learn more about our
Catholic faith and it’s traditions are welcome to attend.
RCIA is the formal process of preparing adults for
initiation into the Catholic Church. The sessions are based on
scripture; sharing real life stories; praying; learning about
Catholic tradition: and observing how Catholics actually live
their faith. The sessions hope to provide a nurturing
environment for deepening one’s understanding of the gospel
message, for spiritual renewal, and for direct contact with
members of the parish.
If you are or someone you know is interested please
contact the Parish office at 532-6291 or Vicki Laquet our
Coordinator of Religious Education at cre@stmarycentralia.org
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FALL FUN
The Knights are finalizing plans for the
Shrimp Fest on September 21 and Trivia Night
in October 18.
There are colorful posters available at both
entrances with all the detail. The Knights ask
that you PLEASE take a poster to your hair
dresser/barber shop, your grocery store,
restaurants or any place of business you
patronize. Ask them if you can put up the
poster.
Your help in promoting the Knights’ fund
raisers is needed and appreciated. It will
enable the Knights to continue being the
asset for St. Lawrence that they now are.
