Division 4 - Masonry

Below Grade Masonry

Below grade masonry construction in cavity walls typically requires the cavity and all block cells to be filled with grout. This protects against the stresses of backfill as well as a solid base for flashings to be installed. This flashing should always be lower than your finish floor elevation.

Once again, pay attention to the flashing details; it should be installed continuously with all laps per manufacturer recommendations (length of lap and type of sealant) and end dams where the wall abuts a change in wall elevation such as a step in the wall or a change in floor height.

Flashings must be coordinated with building wrap installation and NOT applied to the face of the building wrap, it will leak.

At masonry cavity walls, a base flashing must be incorporated into the CMU and not applied to the surface of the block. The use of a termination bar is not recommended. See your details or

Samet Standard Details.

This is also the elevation for weeps to be placed.

Structural walls such as basement walls are usually not veneered, but have a brick shelf just below finish grade. These walls need to be waterproofed in their entirety prior to veneer beginning. (See Div. 7 Guidelines)
