HONORARY APPOINTMENT ROLE DESCRIPTION Role Title Each Baby Counts Reviewer Reporting to Vice President, Clinical Quality Duration and Dates of Appointment Three years Purpose and Description of Role The RCOG is seeking to appoint obstetric and midwifery reviewers for the Each Baby Counts Quality Improvement Programme. This is a new role within the College. In the first instance we are seeking to appoint 15 obstetric and 15 midwifery reviewers, who will be geographically representative of the four UK nations and regionally representative within England. Main Responsibilities The purpose of the role is to conduct a structured review of serious or adverse incident reports relating to serious harm in labour. Reviewers will be responsible for conducting reviews in a timely fashion and in a professional, impartial manner. Key Working Relationships Each Baby Counts Project Team Vice President, Clinical Quality Other Each Baby Counts Reviewers Time Commitment The volume of work will vary from month to month, depending on the geographical volume of reporting, report availability and case ascertainment. Reviewers should allocate approximately 2 hours per month to undertake their case reviews, each of which should take 10-20 minutes to complete. Cases will be allocated to reviewers each month via a secure online platform, log-in details for which will be provided by the Each Baby Counts Project Team. For each review undertaken, reviewers will be required to complete a short online form identifying the key themes that emerged. Travel is not required for this role with the exception of attendance at an RCOG Clinical Engagement Forum in 2016 (1 day) This role is not remunerated. Evaluation of the Role and Succession Planning The initial term for reviewers will be three years, renewable for a further three years. Reviewers who are no longer able to fulfil their commitments may resign from their role via formal notification to the Vice-President, Clinical Quality. Ideally, a notice period of six months will be required to allow sufficient time to recruit and train a replacement reviewer. This role reflects the present requirements of the post. As duties and responsibilities change and develop the role description will be reviewed and be subject to amendment in consultation with the post holders. The role description will be re-evaluated at the end of the term. CPD Information CPD credits are not claimable for the role of Each Baby Counts Reviewer. However, if within this role you gain knowledge which enhances patient care or leadership and technical skills, those registered on the RCOG CPD Programme may claim credits under reflective learning. One credit may be claimed per reflective learning form to a maximum of 25 credits in each 5-year cycle. PERSON SPECIFICATION Qualifications / Training & Experience Essential – Medical GMC Registered Medical Practitioner and in good standing with the GMC. On the Specialist Register for O&G, or in an O&G specialty training programme (years 6 or 7) with an NTN. In active clinical practice, out of programme for experience/research, or retired within the previous three years. Up to date with continuing professional development / outcome 1 from previous ARCP. Member or Fellows of the RCOG. Up to date with membership fees and in good standing with the College. Essential - Midwifery NMC Registered as a midwife with an active practice and in good standing with the NMC. Have two or more years’ experience of being a Risk Management or Practice Development Midwife. Essential – All Applicants Have the necessary commitment and time to take part in the full review process. Willingness to sign confidentiality agreement and adhere to strict code of conduct. Contemporary experience of the NHS maternity environment. Normally resident in the UK. Able to demonstrate detailed knowledge of national and professional service standards, publications and their application. Demonstrate commitment to risk management. Desirable Current or past Each Baby Counts Lead Reporter. Special interest or expertise in risk management.
