Grade 10 Science Project - Household Hazardous Chemicals Task: To create a poster representation of a household hazardous chemical Computer Day – do your research, typing and printing: ____________________________________ Critical Dates: (a) Register your chemical; no duplication/first come/first served by: _________________________________ (b) The formula of the chemical and reference list of sources used due date: ____________________________ (c) The final POSTER due date: ________________________________________________ Step (a): Choose a household product that has an HHMS symbol, and find out the scientific chemical name of its main active ingredient. Step (b): Research and report the proper formula of your chemical. (A chemical formula or a structural formula (bonding diagram) are each acceptable.) Reference the source from which you found the formula, using APA style. Step (c) POSTER FRONT- hand-written only, no magazine or computer visuals 1. 18 cm x 18cm poster surrounded by a colour border 1 cm x 1 cm. The poster will be 20 cm x 20 cm. 2. WHMIS hazard symbols must be somewhere on the poster, 3-5cm in height. 3. The name of the hazardous chemical must be somewhere on the poster (chemical and common names), 3-5 cm in height. 4. Drawings/sketches to depict the characteristics and uses of the chemical. POSTER BACK – must be in paragraph form, using full sentences What is the brand name of a household product that contains your chemical? Give an equation for a reaction involving your chemical; this reaction could involve your chemical as a reactant or a product. For the equation reported, state the type of reaction (i.e. whether this reaction is a synthesis, decomposition, single displacement, or double displacement reaction). If the equation does not fit into one of these categories, classify it as “other” for the type of reaction. Describe the “significance” (good or bad) of your chemical. This should go beyond the specific use of the chemical in the household substance that you first connected the compound to. At the very least, consider the following questions: · Are there economic consequences of using the compound (positive or negative)? · Are there health/environmental consequences of using the compounds (positive or negative)? Remember to give proper credit for your sources of information: Follow APA style guide found on our school website. Reference List needs to be included.
