Read and re-read the story “The Interlopers” by Saki.
For each of the listed fifteen (15) words, find, write down and draw
* FIND the context, i.e. a sentence or phrase in which it is used in the story and WRITE it (“…” pg.__);
* First WRITE DOWN your GUESS; then CHECK and WRITE DOWN word’s real definition;
* DRAW a symbol or illustration that will help you memorize the word.
MANDATORY words:
pp. 33-35: interloper, game, precipitous, acquiesce, detest. quarry (not a place), prowl,
hearth (not heart), exasperation.
pp. 36-37: captive, reconciliation, succour (succor), lull, languor, wildfowl.
OPTIONAL words (USE THESE IF THE GROUP IS BIGGER THAN 3 STUDENTS):
p.34-feud, wont, marauders, pinioned, p.35-descending, plight, condolences,
p.36-draught, Sylvester, gabble, marshes, p.37-fitful, gusts, pestilential, idiotic,
unstrung, hideous.
3. Divide the group responsibilities equally among the group members (e.g., 5 entries for each person in a group). Each
students locates the word in the story (context), and writes it down with quotation marks; however, you may cooperate
with word guesses and symbols or drawings.
4. You are allowed to use dictionaries cell phones to look up the words.
5. As a group identify the THEME of this story.
THEME – central idea behind the story; author’s feelings about important aspect of life; author’s message to the reader
about life; universal statement that the story illustrates.
