Eighth Weekly Semester Meeting WPT: Assessing or Changing Study Behaviors Week of 3/263/30/2012 1 Hour MPT & WPT: The role of student + peer tutor Ninth Weekly Semester Meeting MPT & WPT: Special Needs Students Week of 4/24/6/2012 1 Hour WPT: Instruction and discussion of tutoring students who are taking fully online or hybrid courses; discussion of good study skills for this course format. MPT & WPT: Large group and paired discussion of the sometimes conflicting role of being both a student and a peer tutor on campus. Discussion of how to balance the dual roles. Discussion of what is provided to students with disabilities through the office of Disability Services (ADA required assistance) and what peer tutoring provides. General discussion and case study of one student asking tutors to read the textbook to her during the entire tutor session. Cocoordinators followed-up with Disability Services Coordinator and reported back to tutors with clarifying information regarding the role of each support service. MPT & WPT: Tutoring in specific Skills, and/or Subject Areas Tutors sharing the ways in which they study and take notes (color-coded and divided into sections for in-class lecture, textbook, and self study notes) for anatomy and physiology courses, and what tutoring strategies have helped students. Tenth Weekly Semester Meeting WPT & MPT: How to Tutor/Deal with Target Populations Week of 4/94/13/2012 1 Hour WPT & MPT: Target populations discussed were international students (writing challenges and reading challenges for math problems), students disinterested in their course assignments, and students with hearing impairments. Tutors discussed tutoring the latter with the assistance of computers and interpreters. MPT & WPT: The Role of Learning Centers in Higher Education MPT & WPT: Tutors who attended the NEPTA (New England Peer Tutor Association) conference shared handouts from various workshops and discussed the different Learning Centers they heard about at workshops and planned luncheon discussions. Group Discussion: Peer Associate Degree Tutors now attending 4-year colleges compared the role of the learning centers in their current institutions with the role of learning centers in community colleges. Group Discussion: Co-coordinators gave overview of LAANE (Learning Assistance Association of New England), for which Norman Beebe is a board member. Several Learning Center models were discussed. Note: The annual LAANE conference will be held at Greenfield Community College on October 26, 2012. GCC peer tutors will be involved in this Eleventh Weekly Semester Meeting MPT & WPT: Group Management Skills (Group Interaction and Group Dynamics) Week of 4/164/20/2012 1 Hour Twelfth Weekly Semester Meeting MPT & WPT: Selfregulated Learning Week of 4/23- 1 hour conference. Discussion of inclass tutoring. Peer tutors who have been in-class tutors for the semester discussed the ways in which they support students during class time by moving among small groups, asking probing questions, and clarifying assignments. Peer tutors discussed and problem solved what to do when students from these classes present challenging group dynamics among themselves and among themselves, the tutors, and the instructors. MPT & WPT: Discussion of the and/or Brain Learning, and/or Memory 4/27/2012 diverse approaches to studying, writing, memory, and problem solving students presented throughout the semester, and how TUTOR these approaches and strategies may SURVIVAL differ dramatically MANUAL from the tutors' own styles.
