Design Your Own Biome Objective: Students will be able to research various components of a specific biome and display their biome information as a poster, model, pamphlet, or power point. Students will be able to design a biome in a bottle as a mini representation of their selected biome. Directions: 1. Select your biome: Rainforest Deciduous Forest Taiga Tundra Grasslands Woodlands Savanna Desert 2. Research your biome using any of the following websites as well as any additional websites you find (must be educational website, no ask.com or answers.com, etc.). Record your information on your biome worksheet. You must use AT LEAST 3 different websites to complete this webquest http://www.blueplanetbiomes.org/world_biomes.htm http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/glossary/gloss5/biome/ http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Experiments/Biome/ http://kids.nceas.ucsb.edu/biomes/ http://www.enchantedlearning.com/biomes/ 3. Choose a method to present your information: poster, pamphlet, or essay 4. Create a list of items to include in your bottle biome (see attached sheet): (ex. Desert Biome: sand, mini cactus, toy snake) Design Your Own Biome Template Name of your biome: __________________________________ Location(s): ____________________________________________________ Biotic Organisms: Identify the names of 10 producers found in this biome: ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ Identify the names of 10 consumers found in this biome: ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ Identify the names of 2 decomposers found in this biome: ____________________________________________________ Animal/Plant/Human Adaptations needed to live in this biome (list the biotic organism, the type of adaptation used, what the adaptation is, and why it is used) ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ 4 Predator/Prey relationships that can be found in the biome: (ex. cat is a predator, mouse is the prey) ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ Human Environment: Do humans inhabit your biome? Explain why or why not with evidence: _________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ Describe the cultures present in the biome’s human inhabitants (if applicable) ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ Abiotic (nonliving) Factors: Describe the temperature ranges within this biome: ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ Identify the annual rainfall averages for this biome: ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ Explain what the soil is like in is biome. How does this affect the biotic organisms in the area?: ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ Explain if there are any prominent water sources in the area, identify what the sources are, and why they are important in the biome: ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ Describe what the air is like in the area (this relates to temperature), and how the air affects the biome in general: ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ Does the biome face any problems or issues? (ex. pollution, oil spills, hunting extinct animals). Who/what is affected by these problems/issues? What can be done to solve these problems? ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ 10 Interesting Facts about your biome: (aside from info already stated). Biome Grocery List Ecology Reference Vocabulary Biome- A group of ecosystems that share similar climates and typical organisms Biotic- living things (ex. plants, animals) Abiotic- nonliving things (ex. air, temperature, dirt, water) Organism: a living thing (ex. plants, animals) Consumer: organisms that do not make their own food (animals) Producer: organisms that make their own food (plants) Predator: an organism that preys and feeds on another organism Prey: an organism that is hunted by a predator Structural Adaptation: a physical part that organisms use to survive in their environment Behavioral Adaptation: a behavior an organism engages in to survive in their environment
