Kadedra Griffin Block 1 November 16, 2009 NIGHT In “Night” and Night Time,” Bradley Stewart writes about the different feelings he have at the end of the day, when the sun rests like happiness when he have memories of someone and sadness when he’s lonely. In “Night,” by Bradley Stewart, the main message is that night brings memories. Bradley Stewart’s theme is “Night”. Although the poems are similar in theme, the poet uses different literary devices. Bradley uses symbolism and imagery in his poetry, but Bradley also uses tone in his poem to emphasize the meaning of “Night”. In “Night Time”, Bradley uses symbolism to represent Night as love. He states “The night come and go like my love for you”. In this line Bradley is saying that just like love when someone leaves and comes back, the night turns to day and later on it comes back as night. Bradley uses literary strategy to show what Night means and how Night and love has a pattern. Although Bradley’s message is similar to both of his poems, Bradley doesn’t use symbolism to emphasize his message on the meaning of Night. Although the tones of Bradley’s “Night” and “Night Time” are different, Bradley used the strategy. Bradley’s tone is showing that he is feeling sad and lonely. We know this when he states “the night is sad for some/the night is so alone for me” because he is talking about how sad he is feeling when he is so lonely, after no one is there to comfort him. Bradley’s tone is very different in “Night Time” because “Night” describes how happy Bradley is feeling. This is evident when the poem “Night” states “Night is special for one’s memories forever”. Bradley reveals a different tone in both of his poems in regards to their theme, but they are similar in that they both used the strategy to engage and invite the reader to have an emotional response. In “Night”, Bradley also discusses how night can be changed by using imagery. Bradley believes that Night is everywhere you go. This longer poem gives the reader a picture of what this change would look like. Bradley repeats the line “Night, is to dream” in order to explain that you can imagine a lot of things if you put your mind into it. In the last line of his poem, Bradley emphasizes this point when he states “Night, when beautiful looks like the stream”. Bradley’s used of repetition exemplifies his point-that Night can be imagine as a lot of things. In these two poems, “Night” and “Night Time”, Bradley expresses powerful messages about the meaning of Night. In Bradley’s short poem, he encourages people to let out their feelings when they think of the Night. Bradley’s message is similar but different because in one poem, he is talking about love and in the other one he is talking about memories. Despite their differences Bradley uses these poems to convince the reader of the need for the meaning of Night. Their use of alliteration helps to emphasize the poet’s purpose and meaning of his poems. The author used many different types of literary devices to show the emotional changes in the poems.
