Book in a Bag Contract Due November 17th (We will work on the contract, in school during the weeks of 11/2 and 11/9, if the contract is not complete, the rest will need to be finished at home.) Now that you have read the book "George Washington’s Socks", you are going to make a book in a bag as an advertisement for the Book. Make sure you realize your audience. Will who view this bag? Write to that audience. 1. The bag must first be decorated with pictures, words, symbols, etc., that convey major details, elements, and themes found in the book. 2. After decorating your bag, you will answer 5 questions (choose from questions below. You will place the questions and answers in the bag. 3. Then you will make a list of 5 words that you did not understand in the book or that were challenging. Write the definitions and written examples of usage for each word as it pertains to your life. 4. The fourth item that will be part of the bag's contents is a 3 paragraph paper (Titled “Connections)) 5. Lastly, you will choose one item from a list of activities and complete that activity, placing it in the bag when you are done. Sculptures will go outside of the bag. Question Options for the Five Questions You Must Answer 1. Why do you think Matt is the leader of the Adventure Club? What qualities does he have that make him a good leader? Use examples from the book. 2. How does Matt’s relationships with the members of the Adventure Club shape his personality? 3. What is the theme of this story? Give examples from the book that would lead you to this conclusion. 4. Do you think that the Adventure Club will go on any more adventures? Why or why not? 5. Where do you think the Adventure Club would go next if they had a chance to go on another adventure and why? Use examples from the text that lead you to your conclusion. 6. Imagine Katie as an adult. What would she tell her children if they wanted to go on an adventure? Why do you think she would tell them this? Use examples of her personality from the text that lead you to this conclusion. 7. What are the main events of this story? Make a flow map to share your answer. You must have at least 5 events. 8. How did the author use words to help you visualize the events and setting of the story? Give at least three examples from the book. 9. Having read Sign of the Beaver and George Washington’s Socks, would you want to go on an adventure where you are taken from your family? Support your answer using details from both texts. 10. Interview with a character: You will conduct an imaginary interview of any character. Ask 4 questions. Write the answers you think the characters would give. The questions and answers must be serious and related to the theme and plot of the book. Your interview must be written applying all six traits. Your format should be as follows: (Title) My Interview with ……. Q: A: Q: A: etc. 2. Write a cinquain poem about the theme of George Washington’s Socks: Your poem must be 3 stanza’s long. (Request directions from the teacher.) All directions must be followed. 3. Create a sculpture or picture depicting the essence of the book “ George Washington’s Socks: You may use any medium. The sculpture needs to be no larger than a shoebox. It must include details that portray the theme, mood, and key element of the story. The picture needs to be on a 9/12 piece of construction paper unless you would like to use professional paint paper. Fill the whole space with details from the story, portraying the theme, mood, characters, and major events. You will be asked to explain the relevance of your sculpture or picture. Book in a Bag Rubric: 50 Points possible 1. = 10 points Bag Decoration: The bag must be totally covered with: clear, easy to recognize symbols, pictures, words, etc. that represent five major events, a major theme, protagonist(s), antagonist(s), and the setting. Color must be used, as it will convey mood. You will also need to include a symbol or words that provide your evaluation of the book. 2. = 10 points Answer Questions: Each of five questions should be answered in no less than four well written sentences (follow the six traits). 3. = 10 points Define and use challenging words: List 3 challenging words from the book and use them in well written sentences related to your life. 4. = 10 points Write a 3 paragraph paper: Write 3 connections that you have to the book.
