New -Brunswick Communities Inside Unconventional
Shale Gas and Oil Leases.

This is an estimate of New Brunswick Communities and
populations currently under lease for Unconventional Oil
and Gas Exploration and or exploitation.
This list was derived from the interactive New Brunswick
Government Shale Map, which is available on the New
Brunswick Government Website. This Map changes as
leases expire. I may have missed some small communities
or left out places that bordered the leased areas. These
communities could still be impacted by exploration and
drilling activity. It was also sometimes difficult to clearly
read the boundaries. Since I originally did this work in
January 2014, the Sackville and Dorchester areas are no
longer under lease. This list only reflects currently leased
areas of the province. There are other large areas of the
province that are available for exploration but have not
been leased.
It was impossible to accurately estimate the populations
because of the way the census information is presented. I
had to determine how many communities in each parish
were under lease to an oil and gas company, determine the
percentage of leased communities in each area, and use
the percentage of the total population in that parish to
arrive at a number.
These numbers, therefore, can’t be seen as a precise count.
After removing the Sackville- Dorchester area from my
previous calculations I arrive at a population living in
leased zones of New Brunswick of 222,107
