RYA chartplotter practical application: A workshop for those who have downloaded the new RYA chartplotter, this is a practical session on using it in the classroom as a teaching aid, in addition to developing practice questions. Bring along your laptop to gain the most from this session.
Using E-books to support teaching: With an ever growing list of publications under its belt the RYA has a book to address almost every course that instructors may run. The eBook versions of these publications, with their embedded animations and video explanations, offer us as instructors a new, interactive and visually appealing way to get to get some of our teaching points across. In this session we will look at some of the eBooks available and bring to the session some ideas and ways of using this great new resource to best effect.
Is Anyone Listening?: Are you getting positive responses to your electronic communication or do you sometimes face a deafening wall of silence? Join this session to find out the surprise results to an extensive experiment into instructional emails involving 211 professionals, and get hints & tips on how to make this study work for you. This session should be attended by anyone seeking to improve the positive response rate to email communication.
AIS and Cruising: Ever wondered what the spread of boating looks like at a UK scale? Or how the RYA uses data to protect recreational boating interests? This session will show you the sailing and racing maps the RYA has developed over the last 10 years and the all new AIS density maps which give us a much better picture of UK recreational boating activity. These maps help us to maintain access and navigational safety in UK waters by informing decision-making, engaging with developers and influencing national legislation.
Integrating Disabled Sailors: Gwenneli Sailing Trust Having delivered 20 years of sailing tuition and cruises for people with a range of disabilities, the Gwenneili Trust will use the benefit of their experience to discuss their work and the practicalities of teaching people with disabilities. There will be information on how much can be delivered with a normal RTC cruising centre vessel – which disabilities can be catered for with minimal alteration to the vessel. The focus will be on helping RTCs to be confident in offering training that fill the gap between a student in-need of specialist equipment and someone with no registered disabilities
Instructor Training: In light of recent changes to training of Cruising Instructors, where the focus is on delivering structured practical training, what could RYA Training do to help prepare and enthuse instructors for delivering classroom-based training?
Resources: The new chartplotter and eBooks have been developed with blended learning in mind. What other teaching resources would you like to see designed to facilitate delivery in the shorebased and specialist short courses?
Social Media Guidelines / Usage : Many centres are reaching out to their local area (and the wider world) via social media. Does your training centre have a specific policy on this?
What should we be expecting of training centres and instructors by means of social media etiquette?
