SHEPHERD OF THE HILLS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 4600 South Poplar Street Casper, WY 82601 307-235-3536 CHORAL DIRECTOR JOB DESCRIPTION Mission Statement: The mission of the music ministry of Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church is to continue the ancient tradition of worshiping God through music. Title: Choral Director Supervisor: Church’s Pastor Work Schedule: The Choir Director shall: Direct the choir during weekly choir practice for 1 ½ hours and Sundays at 9:00 am to 9:45 am for 10:00am Worship Service. Choir season runs from the 1st Sunday after Labor Day in September to the Sunday before Memorial Day in May. Attend Monthly meeting with Worship Committee Direct the choir for the weekly worship services and on the Monday before Thanksgiving, the Hanging of the Greens. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (if on Sunday), Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Easter Sunday and Conduct weekly choir rehearsals Estimated Hours Per Week: 5.2 per week over the entire year Duties and Responsibilities: In order to work with the choir and congregation to assure the success of a worshipful music ministry, the choral director shall: Select all choral anthems to be sung each week by the choir. Music should be appropriate for use in the worship service and, if possible, follow the theme or the lessons appointed for the day. Music selections shall be made in consultation with the Pastor and given to the organist well in advance of their rehearsal and presentation by the choir. 1 Provide title and composer for all choral music, and lyrics if appropriate, to the church office each week by Thursday morning. Be responsible for the choir’s appearance, sound and delivery. Rehearse twice weekly with the choir and at additional times as identified by special needs. Shall find a replacement to direct the choir if absence is necessary. This must be approved by pastor and Worship Committee. Arrange for soloists, accompanists or instrumentalists as needed for choral presentation and if guest musicians are to be compensated, arrange with church administrator for payment. Shall purchase music and music supplies for the choir program. Arrange for the cleaning of choir robes as needed (usually every other year). Submit a Choral Music Budget, according to the church’s guidelines to Worship Committee upon request. Collaborate with Logos, Pathfinders and First Foot Steps worship teams. Coordinate scheduling of special music by volunteer or professional musicians for all Sundays during the summer when the choir is not active Maintain the music library Identify, recruit, lead, develop, motivate and encourage volunteer musicians of all ages and abilities. Attend a meeting once a year for an Annual Performance Review Other The Choral director is granted the privilege of teaching interested and responsible students. If lessons are instituted, a student lesson list and practice times shall be presented to the Worship Committee. For students below the age of senior high school wishing to practice, supervision must be arranged. Special Requirements: A person of faith Prior choir directing experience A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Music (or equivalent) is highly preferred. Knowledge of both church choral literature and of a wide variety of musical styles and the ability to teach these varying styles to the choir and other groups. Willingness to work cooperatively with the Pastor and the Worship committee. Effective interpersonal communication skills And most of all, a willingness to participate fully in the life of Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church and to act as a spiritual leader for the choirs. 2
