ROTC PROGRAM STANDARDS OVERVIEW
GENERAL:

Progression and advancement within the Army, like most organizations, is based on
performance. ROTC is the same.

ROTC looks at the whole person – academics, leadership and physical fitness/military
bearing. The better you do in each area the more recognition and opportunities you will
achieve.

Students FIRST, Cadets SECOND (Complete your degree!)
ACADEMICS:

We expect ROTC Cadets to do their very best in all their academic courses. Set the example
in attendance, participation, respect for others and personal responsibility.

Be a full time student. For undergraduates that is 12 credits per semester. The expectation is
that you should complete an average 16 credits per semester.

We keep ROTC mandatory requirements to a minimum so as not to take up your valuable
study time.

If you have any academic difficulties – let us know – we will assist you in getting help. We
want you to succeed!

Cadets that have contracted to become an Army Officer:

Contracted Cadets will complete their degree requirements in an expeditious manner In
Accordance With (IAW) their 104-R (Academic Plan). Coordinate changes to the 104-R
with the PMS.

Contracted Cadets must get PMS approval before they can switch their major.

Contracted Cadets must complete a military history course as part of their PME
requirement MS 290 American Military History (or request substitution through PMS).

Contracted Cadets will maintain at least a 2.0 GPA and a 3.0 GPA in their MS courses.
The expectation is to maintain a 3.0 or better GPA overall and 4.0 in MS.

ROTC will not pay for failures, withdrawals after the Add/Drop Date, incompletes or
course repeats for failure to achieve grades in accordance with the student’s major.
LEADERSHIP:

Leadership development is our primary focus. We use a variety of methods to give cadets
multiple opportunities to practice their leadership skills.

All cadets are highly encouraged to attend the weekly labs and the Field Training Exercises
(FTXs)! These are the highlights of the ROTC program and form the backbone of our
Leadership Development Program.

MS I and MS II Cadets will have an opportunity to serve in assistant positions – they will
also be evaluated in a primary position – the goal is at least once per semester.

MS III Cadets are evaluated a minimum of 5 times. Examples of Leadership Development
Program (LDP) evaluated events: chain of command positions, lab Cadet in Charge (CIC),
squad leaders on FTX situational training exercise lanes, physical training (PT) instructor,
color guard CIC, Ranger Challenge CIC, military ball CIC, commissioning ceremony CIC
and others.

Each cadet should serve at least once on a color guard detail, recruiting event and at one
fundraiser. Cadets that do more will be positively recognized.

Each cadet should consider participation on the Ranger Challenge team, the NMU SLFP
and/or serving in a leadership position within a student organization/club.

Advanced military training – i.e. Airborne, Air Assault, Northern Warfare etc. slots are much
sought after. They will be given based on order of merit – Scholar/Athlete/Leader.

Cadets that have contracted to become an Army Officer:

Contracted Cadets and conditionally contracted Cadets (in the process of being
contracted) must attend all weekly labs. Exceptions must be approved by the PMS.

Contracted Cadets and conditionally contracted Cadets must attend each semester Field
Training Exercise (tentatively 13 October 2011 through 16 October 2011 and 23 March
2012 through 25 March 2012).
PHYSICAL FITNESS and MILITARY BEARING:

Being physically fit is the hallmark of an Army Officer. We lead by example. Those that
wish to become Army Officers should strive to be the best that they can be.

ROTC is designed to teach leadership and develop discipline.

Represent the US Army, the Battalion and the school in a positive manner at all times.

Always wear the uniform correctly and with pride.

Punctuality, attendance and active participation equal success (PT, Labs and Class).

Pass the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) ANY TIME requested.

Set goal of at least 270 points with 90 points in each event before you graduate.

Participate enthusiastically in organized PT per Battalion PT policy letter.

Maintain your weight in accordance with Army Standards (meet Ht/Wt standards and /or
body fat percentage standards).

The Cadre is here to teach, mentor, coach and develop you into future leaders.

Always render proper military customs and courtesies to members of the Cadre.

Cadre will always set a good example.
ADMINISTRATIVE:

All the military members of this ROTC detachment are called "Cadre", non-military are the
“staff”.

Check your email twice daily - email is the administrative source of communication with
cadets. Check both your NMU email address and for contracted cadets, your Army
Knowledge Online (AKO) email address. We will use the website
http://www.rotc.blackboard.com for communications. You will learn how to use this in your
classes.

All actions (documents or data) that are requested from you are necessary for the
maintenance of your records and subsequently may culminate in your commissioning upon
graduation - so don’t delay in providing the document or data. Delays cause BIG problems.

Do not hesitate to call or email or visit the Human Resources Tech, Mr. Lancer Gilliam, if
you have a question about your records, processing of any sort, ROTC subsistence pay,
scholarship tuition payments, etc. Sometimes requires an appointment but most times
doesn’t. Human Resources Technician hours are 0900 to 1600 hours M-F
SCHOLARSHIPS:






The College Four-Year Scholarship is for college freshmen in their first year of a four-year
undergraduate plan.
The three-year scholarship is available for students already enrolled in a college or university
with three academic years remaining.
The two-year scholarship is available for those who have two academic years of college
remaining.
Army ROTC Scholarships pay for full tuition and fees at Northern Michigan University.
Scholarship winners receive $1200 book money per year.
Army ROTC scholarships also provide monthly living allowances for each school year. This
allowance is also available to National Guard, Army Reserve and other cadets in their
sophomore year when contracting.
1st year $300 per month
2nd year $350 per month
3rd year $450 per month
4th year $500 per month
Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP):
Students can get a head start on their military careers through the ROTC Simultaneous
Membership Program. The SMP allows students to be members of the U.S. Army Reserve or
National Guard and ROTC at the same time. At NMU the benefits of the SMP are on par with a
full ROTC scholarship. Students can qualify for the SMP program after they have achieved
sophomore academic status.
Cadets that successfully complete the SMP, graduate with a commission to second lieutenant and
can continue to serve in their unit, the ARNG/USAR or serve on active duty.
Reserve Entitlements:
Advanced course cadets in the SMP are paid at the rate of E-5 for their USAR training
assemblies, in addition to their ROTC stipend. Your BASD for retirement pay purposes will
include your time served in the SMP. Students can be eligible for MGIB, SLP, and SRIP
enlistment bonuses. SRMGIB Kicker is offered to SMP cadets of the USA.
National Guard Entitlements:
45% NMU Tuition Grant, MIARNG, access to Federal Student Assistance (up to 4,000/yr), 5%
ACES, SMP MIARNG Drill Pay SGT/E-5, G.I. Bill $329 per month, G.I. Bill Kicker $350 a
month while contracted MS III & MS IV and ROTC living allowance.
