International Relations Office University of California, Berkeley – Summer Sessions 2015 Registration Guide for NUS Students 1. Before You Begin Before you begin the online registration process for the UC Berkeley Summer Sessions, please ensure you read through all the details listed in this Registration Guide, starting with the following important notes: The NUS International Relations Office is your first point of contact, with regard to questions about the programme and administrative issues (e.g. withdrawals, visa requirements, etc.). Please refer to the contact details at the end of this document. Students who desire to transfer credit back to their NUS degree, should consult their faculty SEP coordinators about credit transfer and module mapping BEFORE applying for the Berkeley Summer Sessions. See the section on “Academic Matters” later in this document for details. Read the registration FAQ, checklist and deadlines for international students: FAQ: http://summer.berkeley.edu/international/faq Checklist: http://summer.berkeley.edu/international/international-checklist Deadlines: http://summer.berkeley.edu/registration/schedule You can search for the summer courses which you wish to take via the Online Schedule of Courses: http://schedule.berkeley.edu/srchsmr.html A printable PDF copy of the Schedule of Courses is also available for download here: http://osoc.berkeley.edu/osoc/Summer2015Schedule.pdf Once you have identified your desired courses, take note of the Course Control Number (CCN) and the number of credit units the course is worth. You will need this information later to complete the registration process. UC Berkeley advises that courses in the Lower Division (1 to 99) and Upper Division (100 to 199) are well-suited for undergraduate students. For courses with pre-requisites, you may be accepted even if you do not meet the requirements. Nonetheless, it remains your responsibility to ensure that you meet any pre-requisites for each course you are applying for. Ensure that you select sufficient courses and credit units to meet the US visa requirements for fulltime enrollment. See this webpage for units required for each Session or combination of Sessions: http://internationaloffice.berkeley.edu/students/summer/full-time The Berkeley International Office website contains critical information and helpful advice: http://internationaloffice.berkeley.edu/students/summer 3rd Storey, Unit 03-03, Shaw Foundation Alumni House, 11 Kent Ridge Drive, Singapore 119244 Fax: (65) 6778 0177 Website: www.nus.edu.sg/iro Company Registration Number: 200604346E 2. When you are presented with the summary page of the courses that you have selected, take note of the column “Waitlist”. If the course has available places and you are successfully enrolled, this column should read “No” for the particular course. If it reads “Yes”, you have been placed on the waitlist, and will only be enrolled in the course if a place becomes available after another student withdraws. Note – Enrollment in courses are on a first-come-first-served basis. You will be waitlisted once the available places for a course have been filled, and there is no guarantee that you will be offered a place in the course where you have been waitlisted. Waitlisted courses do not count towards your visa requirements for full-time enrollment until you have been offered a place in the course, so you will need to select sufficient non-waitlisted courses to meet the visa requirements. You will be required to pay the tuition fee for waitlisted courses at the end of the online registration, but can always drop such courses for a refund before the add/drop deadline. 8. You will be presented with a summary of the tuition fee payable for the courses that you have selected, followed by a summary of the details of your application. Please review the information carefully, and be sure to read the terms and conditions at the end of the summary, before you proceed to submit the application and make an online payment via credit card. 3. After the Online Registration Please review the steps listed under the heading “After You Register” and “Before You Arrive” on the registration checklist webpage: http://summer.berkeley.edu/international/international-checklist Important follow-up actions include: If you wish to make any changes after completing the initial online registration (e.g. add/drop a course, change a class timing, withdraw from the programme, etc.), please contact IRO. Within seven working days of submitting your online registration form, you will receive an email from UC Berkeley with a password encrypted PDF document containing your Berkeley Student Identification Number (SID) and PIN code. If you do not receive this email within the seven-day timeframe, contact IRO immediately. Once you have received your SID and PIN, create your CalNet ID as soon as possible (instructions are sent together with the PDF document). After creating your CalNet ID, log-in to the MySummer portal to upload a scanned copy of your passport (the page with your photograph) as well as your proof-of-funding document (e.g. bank account statement showing a balance of at least SGD 3,500). You will not be required to submit proof of English language proficiency (NUS students are exempted). Berkeley or IRO may contact you directly via email with regard to any errors about your uploaded documents. Within three weeks of uploading your passport / funding , IRO will contact you to collect an important document (the I-20) which is required for your US visa application. IRO will organise a pre-departure briefing in April 2015 for all confirmed participants of the programme. Details of the briefing will be sent to you via your NUS email account by end-March. Academic Matters Note – All academic matters pertaining to a student’s degree programme at NUS are under the purview of the student’s home faculty. IRO can only assist with the administrative aspects that pertains to the operations and logistical issues of the programme. Students must consult their faculty with regard to academic issues before participating in the UC Berkeley Summer Sessions. Students who intend to transfer credit from the Berkeley Summer Sessions to their NUS degree will need to go through the module mapping process (akin to SEP). The following information is provided for reference purposes only. Please consult with your faculty SEP coordinator about your module mapping and credit transfer queries. The following is a list of faculty websites with a generic overview of the module mapping process: Arts & Social Science – http://www.fas.nus.edu.sg/intl/special_prog/modulemapping_OEP.html Business – http://bba.nus.edu/exchange_summer.html Computing – http://www.comp.nus.edu.sg/undergraduates/beyond_sep_module_mapping.html Design & Environment: http://www.sde.nus.edu.sg/acad/SDE_sep.html Engineering – http://www.eng.nus.edu.sg/sep/mapping.htm Science – Email the Dean’s Office for details: scisummerprog@nus.edu.sg USP – http://www.usp.nus.edu.sg/curriculum/student-exchange/substitution.html Note – Law students are generally unable to transfer credit from summer programmes due to the special graduation requirements of their degree. Please consult with your faculty SEP coordinator for more details. When completing the UC Berkeley online registration, please ensure that you select your grading option as “Letter” so as to receive a graded transcript. Most faculties at NUS require that you pass each of your courses and receive a grade, in order to facilitate the credit transfer process.
