Utilizing the Center for Wellness Promotion (CWP) This is a guide for UNC Charlotte Resident Assistants (RAs) and Student Organizations to be aware of available resources from the Center for Wellness Promotion. This guide will assist you in utilizing CWP resources to plan health and wellness events on campus. These packages include condoms, lubricant, instructions on how to properly use condoms, and a supplemental informational booklet. CARE packages are located in the UNC CHARLOTTE Wellness Promotion Department during normal Student Health Center hours. Quit Packs “Quit Packs” are available free of charge through the Center Wellness Promotion to UNC CHARLOTTE students who are ready to quit smoking. These packs include information, aids, and fun items to help students on their journey to a smoke-free life. Tobacco Cessation Counseling A voluntary tobacco cessation program is available to UNC Charlotte students free of charge. An appointment for a 45minute session with a health educator will be scheduled to discuss a quit plan, withdrawal symptoms, nicotine replacement products, and/or medicinal options. Students set their own goals and return for follow-up appointments every week for two weeks for 15-20 minutes with the health educator. 2|Page Sexual Health Counseling Sexual health Counseling is available to UNC CHARLOTTE students free of charge. If students have any questions about their sexual health, contraception, sexually transmitted diseases/infections, or other issues related to sex and relationships, they are encouraged to make an appointment. Students will have a completely confidential one-on-one meeting with a health educator. Substance Use Counseling Substance abuse can affect physical health, social relationships and academic and work performance. A Licensed Clinical Addiction is available in the Center for Wellness Promotion to give individual assessments and counseling for alcohol and drug issues. Greek Life Awards Each year, the Center for Wellness Promotion offers two Greek Life Awards to UNC CHARLOTTE fraternities and sororities. The Wellness and Education Promotion Award acknowledges Greek organizations that make an effort to educate their members on many different aspects of Health. The Alcohol Awareness and Prevention Award acknowledges Greek organizations that make an effort to combat alcohol abuse and misuse within the Greek community. The first place winner receives a $200 reward and a plaque and the second place winner receives a plaque for both Awards. The program details alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. o o 60 Minutes Game and Presentation format Tobacco 101 o This is a game about tobacco use, smoking cessation, and second-hand smoke. o 60 Minutes o Game format Fairy Tale Endings: Do Relationships Really Have Them? o Ideologies of gender, sexuality, and the "fairy tale" ending are constructed in Disney films past and present. When children grow up they are still bombarded with images and messages from the media with society’s ideals for gender roles and fairy tale relationships. o *Collaborative program with Multicultural Resource Center o 60 Minutes o Game and Presentation format Interpersonal Violence 101 o What college student should know about sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking. Students will learn about interpersonal violence on college campuses, University policies, resources available, and tools to help a friend. o 60 Minutes o Presentation format 4|Page IV 101 Sex: What's Your Position? o What is sex? What are STIs and how can you prevent them? What birth control is right for you? Get these answers, and many more, in this fun and candid program o 60 Minutes o Presentation format Sex, Drugs & Band-Aids o This program gives you a little bit of everything. Get education on safer sex, alcohol and other drugs, and general information about the Student Health Center. o 60 Minutes o Game format ONE ACT - Bystander Intervention Training o ONE ACT is a 4-hour bystander intervention training for those interested in preventing violence on our campus. The training will give you knowledge, skills, and the confidence to recognize early warning signs of violence and take preventive ACTion. By starting with ONE ACT, we can all contribute to a safer campus environment. o *ONE ACT is an adapted curriculum from our friends at UNC Chapel Hill. o 4 Hour Training (can be broken up into 1 hour trainings) o Presentation format Stress & Time Management o A presentation on how students can balance daily stress and manage their time. o 60 Minutes o Presentation format Healthy Relationships– Are you Seeing Red, Green, or Somewhere In Between? o An interactive experience where students get to be the relationship expert! We will be showing clips from poplar movies, TV shows, and music videos and students get to decide if the characters get a Red Flag or Green Flag on their relationship. o 60 Minutes o Presentation format (very interactive) 5|Page Presentations (cont’d) Speakers Would you like a Health Educator from the Center for Wellness Promotion to speak or hold a presentation at one of your events? Submit a program request form on the wellness website at least 2 weeks in advance. Health educators can present the programs listed above or help you with other special program needs. The Center for Wellness Promotion offers Programs in a Box for R.A.’s who are more hands-on with their residents and programs. These boxes contain information on how to conduct the program and materials to assist with a successful presentation. PIB’s may also be requested on the Center for Wellness Website at: http://wellness.uncc.edu/about-us/ra-resources/programs-box-descriptions. 6|Page Wellness Events The Center for Wellness promotions sponsors and co-sponsors many different campus events to increase UNC CHARLOTTE students’ knowledge of health. These events are educational, fun, and sometimes include great freebies such as food, UNC CHARLOTTE labeled items, prizes, and tools to help improve your health. Encourage your fellow students to attend some of the events held throughout the year. They could learn something new and have a blast at the same time! Some of the events include: Wellness Wednesdays (Student Union) This event features new health topics for each event. Learn about health topics, play games, and win free prizes! Rockin’ for Recovery Support the Collegiate Recovery Community in celebration of sobriety! Don’t leave without your free give-aways! The Great American Smokeout The Great American Smokeout encourages smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day. Come get resources for yourself or friends on how to quit smoking and pick up some freebies along the way. 7|Page Safer Sex Fair Come out to learn more about safer sex and receive free HIV testing and free condoms. Test your knowledge of safer sex with the CRC’s trivia games. Vagina Monologues Can you relate to the “feminine experience”? Would you like to know more information about matters such as sex and love from the woman’s perspective? Then the Vagina Monologues play is where you should be! All proceeds from ticket sales benefit Safe Alliance. BAC Patrol Pick up a BAC card at the Center for Wellness Promotion and carry it with you year-round for a chance to win a $5 gift card! And so much more! Continue to visit the Wellness Website and read posters on campus to stay updated about upcoming wellness events. 8|Page Interpersonal Violence If you or someone you know has experienced interpersonal violence (IPV), the Center for Wellness Promotion is here to help. There are many on-campus resources available to assist people experiencing IPV so that they can get out of (or recover from) a bad situation in a safe manner. Interpersonal Prevention Services are available for information, support, advocacy, prevention programming and links to resources. The CWP has an education specialist who coordinates prevention and support services for relationship violence, sexual assault and stalking. (704-687-7348) The Student Health Center provides health check-ups, STI/HIV screening, health counseling, and individual and group counseling for those who may have experiences interpersonal violence. (704-687-7400) 9|Page The Counseling Center is another option that is available to see students who are in crisis on a walk-in basis during business hours. If students do not feel as though they are in crisis, they should make an appointment to see a counselor to receive a full assessment. (704-687-0311) If you are in immediate danger, please contact UNC CHARLOTTE Police and Public Safety at (704-687-2200) or dial 911. Safe Ride is safety escort transportation and can be vital if you or someone you know is experiencing interpersonal violence. There are also off-campus resources to help those experiencing IPV. What can the CRC do for you? This program follows the harm reduction model, so students are encouraged to make safer and healthier decisions, but it is up to them to make their own personal choices. What is required of Peer Educators? Provide a judgment-free environment for their peers Promote safer and healthier choices concerning various aspects of health including but not limited to: o Mental Health o Alcohol and Drug Use o Sexual Health o Nutrition o Body Image o Tobacco o Stress o Relationship Violence Be a role model for their peers by practicing healthy behaviors Continue to educate themselves on various health topics UNC CHARLOTTE’s Peer Health Education Group is affiliated with the National Bacchus Network, which supports campuses with cutting edge tools for student-friendly training programs. "Norming" stands for = Social Norms and UNC Charlotte’s mascot Norm! "NINER" stands for = Niners Informing Niners Encouraging Responsibility Norming Niners is UNC CHARLOTTE’s peer educator team associated with the national BACCUS network. Norming Niners are excited about wellness and always ready to tell their peers about making healthy choices concerning various health topics. This group of students is certified as peer educators through the BACCHUS network and will have the opportunity to attend and present at national BACCHUS conferences. What else do Norming Niners do? Promote a non-judgmental, accepting attitude and environment Complete the Peer Education Certification process through the BACCHUS NETWORK Increase their knowledge about healthier lifestyle choices Practice healthier lifestyle choices Develop, plan, promote, implement, and evaluate programs and campaigns at UNC CHARLOTTE Present wellness programs to classrooms Would you like to be Norming Niner or do you know someone else who would be perfect for the job?
