Achieving Sexual Purity (Friday December 30th Session #6 Brian Boston) I. My testimony of growing in purity II. My goals for this lesson (1) To give hope to those who are fighting for sexual purity (2) To, by God’s sufficient word and Spirit, cut to the heart those who are not engaged in this battle for purity and awaken them to it. III. How will we achieve sexual purity? [Phil.3:12-21] My goal is to use this text on progressive holiness as a template to identify the goal for the Christian in pursuing his Savoir as the means to holiness/ sexual purity, and not to make holiness/ sexual purity there singular goal in life but Christ “the one thing I do”. And as we grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ we will be growing in holiness/ sexual purity because our greatest desire is to please Christ and not ourselves. 1. We must take aim at the prize (Jesus) v.14 [1thess.4:13-18] 2. We must focus on Him without distraction “one thing I do” v.13 cf. vv.7-11 [2cor.3:18] 3. We must be motivated by His purpose for our life “I press on to make it my own, because he has made me his own” v.12 [1cor.6:19-20; 2cor.5:14-15] 4. We must be intense in our pursuit of Him v.12-14 “press on.. press on toward…straining forward” [Rom.7:23-24; Gal.6:7-9] 5. We must think right as we pursue Him v.15 “let those who are mature think this way…(humility + honesty= endurance) [vv.12,16] “not that I have already obtained or am already perfect… only let us lay hold true to what we have attained.” 6. We must work with others to continue on in the fight v.17 “brothers join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us.” [Heb.10:23-25] 7. We must fight with hope v.20-21 “our citizenship is in heaven and from it we await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body…” [1cor.15:57-58; Heb. 11:24-26; Rom.7:25-8:1] Conclusion: getting to the heart of sexual purity means pleasing Jesus with all my choices. [2cor.10:5]
