Name: Third Grade Science Plans Monday Nov. 18 Organisms and Environments, Part 1 Tuesday Nov. 19 Organisms and Environments, Part 1 Wed. Nov. 20 Organisms and Environments, Part 1 Thurs. Nov. 21 Organisms and Environments, Part 1 Friday Nov. 22 Organisms and Environments, Part 1 Date: November 18, 2013 Anticipatory Set/Hook: T will ask students to identify the basic needs of organisms and reinforce that organisms get what they need from their environment. Take students outside to observe the school environment. Make notes and sketches in journal. Possible prompts: What living organisms do you see? o What does the organism need to live? o How do they meet their needs in this environment? o What would happen if their food source was gone? We will / Objective: observe and describe the physical characteristics of environments and how they support populations and communities within an ecosystem I will /Product/Task: record notes and observations in my journal. POP: Academic Language: organism, environment, needs Anticipatory Set/Hook: T will show PowerPoint on Ecosystems. Discuss each slide and build vocabulary and access prior knowledge. (Picture vocabulary slides can also be used to build understanding.) When viewing ecosystems prompt students to discuss what plants and animals can be found there. What habitats are found there (where do the animals live?) How do the animals meet their needs? How does climate affect the plants and animals that live there? We will / Objective: observe and describe the physical characteristics of environments and how they support populations and communities within an ecosystem I will /Product/Task: complete a brace map in my journal. POP: Students will complete a brace map to show the relationship between environment, ecosystem, population, community, and habitat. Academic Language: environment, ecosystem, population, community, habitat Anticipatory Set/Hook: T will show the video:” Science is Elementary: The Living World: Ecosystems” (14:58 from united streaming). Explain to students they will work in groups to complete an ecosystem project. Distribute project form and rubric. We will / Objective: : observe and describe the physical characteristics of environments and how they support populations and communities within an ecosystem I will /Product/Task: select an ecosystem to research. POP: Academic Language: environment, ecosystem, population, community, habitat Anticipatory Set/Hook: T will show students the Ecosystem project pathfinder document. Explain how it will be used to locate information about the ecosystems. We will / Objective: observe and describe the physical characteristics of environments and how they support populations and communities within an ecosystem I will /Product/Task: research an ecosystem and create a poster, mobile, tree map or presentation. POP: Academic Language: environment, ecosystem, population, community, habitat Anticipatory Set/Hook: Today we will continue our research. We will / Objective: observe and describe the physical characteristics of environments and how they support populations and communities within an ecosystem I will /Product/Task: research an ecosystem and create a poster, mobile, tree map or presentation. POP: Academic Language: environment, ecosystem, population, community, habitat
