Anticipatory Set/Hook: T will ask students to identify the basic needs of organisms and reinforce that
organisms get what they need from their environment.


Take students outside to observe the school environment. Make notes and sketches in journal.
Possible prompts: What living organisms do you see?
o What does the organism need to live?
o How do they meet their needs in this environment?
o What would happen if their food source was gone?

support populations and communities within an ecosystem

Anticipatory Set/Hook: T will show PowerPoint on Ecosystems. Discuss each slide and build vocabulary
and access prior knowledge. (Picture vocabulary slides can also be used to build understanding.)




When viewing ecosystems prompt students to discuss what plants and animals can be found there.
What habitats are found there (where do the animals live?)
How do the animals meet their needs?
How does climate affect the plants and animals that live there?

POP: Students will complete a brace map to show the relationship between environment, ecosystem,
population, community, and habitat.

Anticipatory Set/Hook: T will show the video:” Science is Elementary: The Living World: Ecosystems”
(14:58 from united streaming). Explain to students they will work in groups to complete an ecosystem
project. Distribute project form and rubric.
