BE PART OF THE ARMY! RALLY FOR ALI! Ali’s Army Ali Hayes is a 16 year old sophomore at Mehlville High School who was diagnosed April 25th with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Prior to her diagnosis, Ali enjoyed a healthy and active lifestyle, participating in Softball both at Mehlville and on a summer league and particularly enjoyed waterskiing. Ali’s diagnosis was quite unexpected and her treatment will be lengthy, but the support she is receiving from her family, friends, classmates and community is especially motivating. Acute Myeloid Leukemia can only be treated in-patient and her total hospitalization is estimated to be from 6-9 months before remission is achieved. Acute Myeloid Leukemia is a fast-growing cancer of the blood that starts in the bone marrow. AML prevents bone marrow cells from growing the way they are supposed to and instead, the leukemic (blast cells) continue to replicate and build up in the bone marrow preventing the production of white cells which help to fight infection. Because of the blast’s rapid growing rate, they begin to block space that the body needs for red blood cells and platelets. Fewer than 10% of children are diagnosed with AML yearly. Since her diagnosis a short time ago, “Ali’s Army” was formed by her classmates, family and friends to show their support in Ali’s fight against Leukemia. In order to assist with her immediate needs and medical expenses, we have chosen a “Rally for Ali” benefit to take place on June 22, 2013 at Indian Hills Swim Club as our first major fundraiser. We are currently seeking donations of items that can be used for auction, raffle or attendance prizes to make this a huge success. Ali’s Army is thankful for your assistance and consideration!
